Elmer Weber Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Iles Westover Chapel on Feb. 29, 2024.
Elmer J. Weber, 83, of Johnston, IA, passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
Elmer was born May 8, 1940, in Jefferson City, MO, son of John Bernhardt and Hulda Anna Elizabeth (Strobel) Weber. He received his education in Jefferson City, MO where he graduated high school in 1958. He then went to work for his father in residential construction in Jefferson City before attending college. While in college at University of Missouri, he began dating Carolyn Harfst, who he later married on September 4, 1965. He continued college and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1968.
After college, Elmer was employed as a Civil Engineer for Pittsburg Des Moines Steel Company (PDM), a steel fabrication company, best known for building the St. Louis Arch and many bridges across the country.
Following his retirement from PDM after 39 years, Elmer and Carolyn traveled the country in their motorhome, visiting almost all of our National Parks. They also enjoyed international travel to Canada, Europe, Israel, and Central and South America. Elmer was also known for and truly enjoyed woodworking, especially making furniture for his family and friends.
Elmer felt called to serve God's church and he served it in many active ways. His friendliness as an usher and greeter, his thoughtfulness as a trustee and elder, and his love of maintenance and construction as the jack-of-all-trades at the half dozen LCMS congregations he was a member of. The well-being of the people and the church facilities were a top priority for Elmer. He and Carolyn even found a passion for mission work when they traveled to Tijuana, Mexico with their friends from Mt. Olive Lutheran in Wausau, Wisconsin. He touched the lives of many people, four trips and many house-raisings later.
Elmer is survived by his wife Carolyn, daughter Kristen (Nate) Goodrich of Ashland, MO, two sons Eric (Deanna) Weber of Grimes, IA and Jeff Weber of Des Moines, three grandchildren Kailey and Tanner Goodrich and Laynne Weber, two brothers, James Weber of Jefferson City, MO and David Weber of Annville, PA and a sister Marilyn (Martin) Ruengert of St. Charles, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters-in-law, Betty Weber (Jim) and Joyce Weber (Dave).
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 4, 2024, at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Johnston where visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow the service at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes, IA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Messiah Lutheran Church in loving memory of Elmer Weber, 6270 Merle Hay Rd, Johnston, IA 50131
