Elmo was born July 20, 1955, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, to Elmo Harvey Johnson Sr. and Juanita U. (Ringer) Johnson. He attended Dewey Public Schools, graduating from Dewey High School in 1973. Elmo played football and baseball during his high school years, and he developed a love for sports throughout his life. He was a huge OU fan. Boomer Sooner!
Elmo's passion for sports was shared with his children, CJ and Callie, as he served as assistant coach for much of their childhood. In addition to serving as assistant coach for Copan Public Schools from 2004-2008, Elmo also was assistant coach for YMCA football and Blazer softball. He also ran the game clock at Dewey High School alongside Don Osborne, David Dodge, and David Chancelor.
Elmo married his sweetheart, Cheryl Ann Wilson, on September 3, 2010, in Miami, Oklahoma. This blessed Elmo with three stepchildren and numerous grandchildren. He was a good family man.
Elmo also had a love for the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. Many people will remember him as a well-known fisherman in the area. He was a handyman and loved helping people. He was a good cook and made wonderful fried chicken, fried fish, and fried potatoes. The 4th of July was his favorite holiday and he loved watching fireworks.
Oftentimes, when he was talking to someone on the phone, he would end the conversation with "I love you, bro." He also liked to say, "'I see," said the blind man to his deaf daughter.'"
Elmo's family will be hosting a family memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 27, 2025 at Dewey United Methodist Church. The family requests people call them for details and for possible memorial donations in lieu of flowers. Please call Cheryl at 918-327-6514 or CJ at 775-486-3089.
