Eloise Davis Anderson
Sunrise – June 6, 1922
Sunset – November 15, 2025
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, George E. Anderson, Sr.; parents, Wilbert and Eva Davis; siblings, Wilbur Davis, Russell Davis, Beulah Smith, Evelyn Frances, Ethel Edwards, Harold Davis, and Lionel Davis.
Eloise was born on June 6, 1922, in Cumberland, Maryland. Cumberland, Maryland was her heart and it was a joy to hear her reminisce about growing up with her many siblings, the fun they had, and the awesome adventures they got into. If you never heard the story about the black snake or her taking fruit from the neighbor's fruit trees, you truly missed out. In her younger years, she worked for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore, and then went on to meet George Sr. while being a part of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Once they moved to Rochester, Eloise became a Homemaker to her then young family while George Sr. established his barbershop as a southwest side staple. Parenting George Jr. and Donovan was one of her greatest treasures. She also loved her Clarissa Street neighborhood, and had quite the family support there, as many of her siblings and their families lived close by. Up until a few years ago, she frequented the Clarissa Street Reunion and enjoyed meeting up with old familiar faces and seeing the old neighborhood. Eloise and George Sr. moved into their Barton St. home in January 1971, where she lived up until her passing. If those walls could talk, they would tell you how much she enjoyed cooking for her family, baking, entertaining during the holidays, helping to raise "her Melanie", doing crossword and sudoku puzzles, reading, watching her many soap operas, and being the best neighbor that anyone could ever ask for. When asked at the age of 100 about her secret to a long life, she accredited her age to having two cups of coffee a day!
Eloise was always busy! She cherished her long walks along the Genesee River path and until earlier this year was walking up to the Family Dollar Store to get snacks and anything else she felt she needed. She was quite independent, even into her 100's! Eloise had hobbies over the years such as bowling, being a part of the neighborhood block club, going to garage sales, and traveling to see her great-grands. She attended Abundant Grace Church, where her nephew Leonard Banks is Pastor. Her "honorary granddaughter", Laura ensured that she got to and from church each week until she began to slow down a bit. Eloise looked forward to Sundays when she heard the good word and fellowshipped with her church family. Although George Jr. and Melanie's mother Nancy were divorced, Eloise remained close to her daughter-in-law. They talked often and always picked up right where they left off.
Eloise was quite the trooper. She embodied grace, faith, and humility up until the end. She had the "Eloise" spirit every day, but her 103-year-old body and the Man above had different plans. George Jr and Eloise were the best of buddies, and he ensured that she was well taken care of. Once it was decided that she needed a higher level of care, Eloise was moved to The Sunset House for hospice care. The staff at The Sunset House cared for Eloise as if she was a beloved family member, in particular Lisa McElroye who spent time with Eloise even on her days off. Words cannot express the gratitude that the family has for Lisa and the staff. As Eloise began to slow down and transition through her process, she remained jovial, grateful, humorous, and full of poise. She looked forward to her daily visits from George Jr., and her FaceTime calls with her granddaughter Melanie. Eloise always ended the conversations saying "I love you all". She is now resting in eternal peace with her siblings, George Sr., and a plethora of family and friends who we are certain welcomed her and wanted to know how she pulled off 103 years.
Eloise is survived by her sons, George E. Anderson, Jr. and Donovan Anderson; grandchild, Melanie Anderson McElroye (David); great-grandchildren, Ty D. McElroye and Nya B. McElroye; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and cherished friends from all across the country.
