Emerita Velez Rivera

Emerita Rivera, affectionately known to many as Meri Chiquita, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025, surrounded by loved ones and in the comfort and care of her devoted daughter, Lillian.

Born on September 22, 1932, in Lares, Puerto Rico, Emerita built a life defined by love, faith, and family. In the 1950s, she moved her young family to southern New Jersey, first settling in Norma before planting deep roots on the corner of 8th and Almond Street in Vineland, where she would live for more than 50 years and become a familiar neighbor for many generations of neighborhood residents. A talented and hardworking seamstress, Emerita dedicated her career to her craft, working for numerous clothing companies throughout South Jersey, including over 25 years at Newell Clothing.

Emerita was a beloved mother, wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother, the proud matriarch of a large and loving family. She helped raise many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating a home filled with warmth, joy, and unconditional love. Her house was a green oasis, surrounded by her cherished garden, a place where generations of her grandchildren gathered to swing in hammocks, pick flowers, and enjoy the beauty of a summer day together.

She found joy in life's simple pleasures, from shopping with family and hunting for the best deals to sharing laughter and stories over home-cooked meals and coffee. But above all, Emerita was a woman of deep and abiding faith. A devout Catholic, she was a lifelong servant of the Lord and an active, cherished member of her Spanish Catholic church community. Her faith guided every part of her life, and she found great peace and purpose in worship and service.

Emerita is predeceased by her parents, Juana Lopez and Jose Velez; her daughter, Mary Soto; and her granddaughter, Sabrina Soto.

She is survived by her loving children, Silvia, Henry, Lillian, Yolanda, and Orlando; her grandchildren Angel, Anthony, Isis, Ciara, Samantha, Ariel, Gabriella, Brianna, and Cecily; and her 15 beautiful great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many extended family members and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Emerita's legacy of love, faith, and family will continue to bloom in the hearts of all who knew her.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025, at Divine Mercy Parish (St. Francis), 23 W. Chestnut Ave., Vineland, NJ 08360. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Emerita Rivera, cariñosamente conocida por muchos como Meri Chiquita, falleció en paz el 29 de septiembre de 2025, rodeada de sus seres queridos y bajo el cuidado y amor de su hija Lillian.

Nacida el 22 de septiembre de 1932 en Lares, Puerto Rico, Emerita construyó una vida marcada por el amor, la fe y la familia. En la década de 1950, se trasladó con su joven familia al sur de Nueva Jersey, estableciéndose primero en Norma antes de echar raíces en la esquina de la 8ª y Almond Street en Vineland, donde vivió por más de 50 años.

Trabajadora incansable y talentosa costurera, Emerita dedicó su carrera a su oficio, trabajando para numerosas compañías de ropa en todo el sur de Nueva Jersey, incluyendo más de 25 años en Newell Clothing. Su habilidad, dedicación y ética de trabajo dejaron una huella imborrable en todos los que compartieron su camino.

Emerita fue una madre, esposa, abuela y bisabuela amada - la orgullosa matriarca de una familia grande y amorosa. Ayudó a criar a muchos de sus nietos y bisnietos, creando un hogar lleno de calidez, alegría y amor incondicional. Su casa era un oasis verde, rodeada por su amado jardín - un lugar donde generaciones se reunían para mecerse en hamacas, recoger flores y disfrutar de la belleza de los días de verano.

Encontraba alegría en los placeres sencillos de la vida: ir de compras con su familia en busca de las mejores ofertas, compartir risas y anécdotas, y disfrutar de las pequeñas bendiciones del día a día. Pero, sobre todo, Emerita fue una mujer de profunda y firme fe. Católica devota, sirvió al Señor durante toda su vida y fue un miembro activo y querido de su comunidad parroquial hispana. Su fe guió cada aspecto de su vida, brindándole paz y propósito en su camino de servicio y devoción.

Emerita fue precedida en la muerte por sus padres, Juana López y José Vélez; su hija, Mary Soto; y su nieta, Sabrina Soto.

Le sobreviven sus amados hijos: Silvia, Henry, Lillian, Yolanda y Orlando; sus nietos: Ángel, Anthony, Isis, Ciara, Samantha, Ariel, Gabriella, Brianna, Cecily y Héctor; además de sus 15 hermosos bisnietos. También le sobreviven muchos otros familiares y amigos que siempre conservarán con cariño su memoria.

Los servicios fúnebres se llevarán a cabo el viernes, 3 de octubre de 2025, en la Parroquia Divine Mercy (St. Francis), ubicada en 23 W. Chestnut Ave., Vineland, NJ 08360. La Misa de cuerpo presente comenzará a las 9:00 a.m., seguida por el entierro en el Cementerio Sacred Heart.
