Emerita Velez Rivera

Emerita Rivera, September 22, 1932 – September 29, 2025. Emerita Rivera, lovingly known as Meri Chiquita, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025, surrounded by family and in the loving care of her daughter, Lillian.

Born in Lares, Puerto Rico, Emerita moved to southern New Jersey in the 1950s, eventually settling in Vineland, where she made her home for over 50 years. A talented seamstress, she worked for many South Jersey clothing companies, including more than 25 years with Newell Clothing.

A devoted Catholic and cherished member of the Spanish church community, Emerita lived a life rooted in faith, family, and love. She was the proud matriarch of a large family and helped raise many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her home, filled with warmth and

surrounded by gardens, was a joyful gathering place for generations.

Emerita is predeceased by her parents, Juana Lopez and Jose Velez; her daughter, Mary Soto; and granddaughter, Sabrina Soto. She is survived by her children Silvia, Henry, Lillian, Yolanda, and Orlando; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends. Emerita's faith, love, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Relatives and friends will be received on Friday, October 3, 2025, from 9:00am until 10:00am at Divine Mercy Parish (St. Francis Church), 23 W. Chestnut Ave., Vineland, followed by a mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am. Interment will be held in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Vineland.
