Emil Mialik Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Mar. 20, 2011.
MIALIK, Dr. Emil A. Live and let live; Serve and Love; Think and let think. Dr. Emil Mialik used these words to guide his life. Born in Passaic, N.J., he died March 17, 2011 at his home in Charlotte, N.C. His parents, Alexander and Rose Mialik, and two brothers, George and Ernest, preceded him in death. Following graduation from Clifton High School in New Jersey, he entered the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Guam, which engaged in the Battle of Okinawa. His education varied: Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J. and graduate work at the University of Richmond and Southeastern Seminary, Wake Forest, N.C., where he earned a doctorate in ministry. Prior to his seminary training, he was employed at Western Electric in Greensboro, N.C. where development of the Nike Missile was underway. His 37 years in ministry included work with the Baptist Home Mission Board; Blandwood Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, N.C.; Great Fork Baptist Church in Suffolk, Va.; Leigh Street Baptist Church in Richmond, Va.; and Wedgewood Baptist Church in Charlotte, N.C. His interests were eclectic. In addition to philosophy and theology, he was talented in art, architecture and athletics. The Bank of Virginia honored him in the late sixties by sponsoring his artwork. He gained recognition in Richmond and Charlotte as an outstanding softball pitcher. In Virginia, he designed and supervised construction of educational buildings for two different churches. Survivors include his wife, Joan Ratcliffe Mialik; children, Deborah Cates, Richard Sidney Mialik and Barbara Fisher; sisters, Evelyn Novitsky and Florence Henry; brother, Bernard Mialik; and five grandchildren, Zac and Jordan Cates, Taylor Mialik, and Audrey and Renee Fisher. A time of remembering will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Park Road Baptist Church. Special memories will be shared by colleagues in the ministry, Amy and Russ Dean, Chris Ayers, and friends and family. Following the service, the family will greet friends in the church fellowship hall. Those wishing to contribute a memorial may give donations to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region or to a charity of their choice. The family expresses gratitude to all friends who contributed graciously to his care in the last months of his life. Condolences may also be expressed at harryandbryantfuneralhome.com.

Joan, Debbie, Richard , Barbara and all the extended family, we are thinking of you at this time as we cherish the wonderful memories of Uncle Emil and a full life beautifully lived. May it comfort you to know that he was loved and well thought of by so many family and friends, and also that he is no longer suffering. Hoping to see you all at a point sometime soon, and a gathering or a reunion type occasion hopefully can be arranged in the not too distant future where we can reminisce and celebrate his life again. We will plan to be there in sprit on Saturday and keep you all once again in our thoughts and prayers on that occasion honoring a wonderful man and a magnificent life. We will stay in touch and I myself plan to send a personal note very soon to each of you. Please let us know if you ever need anything, or just a shoulder, or the comfort of family here. Our heartfelt love to you all, and always.

I was sorry to hear the passing of Rev. Mialik. I was a member of Leigh Street when he was there and knew him to be an outstanding minister to the Congregation.
He married my husband, Lee, and myself in August,1967. Joan, my sympathy goes
out to you and your family. My parents
Henry and Genevieve Gordon were so fond of you and Rev. Mialik.

To Joan and the family, I was saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Mialik. He came into my life at a time when I needed someone like him. We had a great time at Wedgewood Baptist under his leadership. I, too, remember his outstanding artwork and his understanding of lighting and shadow. He never stopped amazing me. His use of light and shadow always astounded me. And, who can forget all the picnics and special meals we had back then. He had some really great ideas about how a church family should not only worship together but should fellowship together. He insisted that I play the guitar in many services, both inside the sanctuary and on the grounds. And, I still play for a youth group in a church near me. We, at Wedgewood, were so proud of him when he got his DD (Doctorate). He is in a better place now, but he leaves some teriffic memories behind. One of those memories is his love of softball. Our church always had a good softball team and sometimes even a great team. Watching his members play good softball was a great joy for him. Please accept my condolences and know I have some fond memories of him.

All the memories of a remarkable uncle brings a smile to my face. Emil worked hard for the accomplishments he achieved, although his talents made it look easy. He was an uncle who reached out to each member of his extended family time and time again. I'll always remember his trips to NJ and trips visiting him. Serious conversation and joking about everything and anything. A time at bat for his church team. A round on the golf course with him and my dad. His 80th birthday party celebrating his life here. Too many memories to list. Emil's legacy will live on in all who knew him. I know it will in me. His real reward has just begun.

From a Niece who loved you so...I have so many wonderful memories of you, Uncle Emil. I remember my wedding and how you led the wedding train around the ballroom and gave a wonderful toast for Carl and I; our day trip to Boston after cousin Gladys' son's wedding; how you were (immediately) there for my family and I after our Dad's passing and the wonderful eulogy you gave. There are just too many lifetime memories to list. I know you were everyone's favorite friend. Your understanding, love, compassion and kindness was deeply felt by everyone. It left an everlasting impression on all. You were truly a remarkable Uncle. I will miss you and you will forever be in my heart. Love Your Niece - Sharon Novitsky

Thank you Reverend Mialik for always being an inspiration to me. You baptized me when I was 12 years old. You always had time to talk to me and share your messages of faith. They live in my heart, as will the memory of you. Thank you from a teenager from the youth group of the '70's. When I was not sure what to do when I went off to college, you said I should think about my art, my writing, and my love for children. I am in my 19th year of teaching kindergarten and use all of those talents. Thank you so much for leading me down the right path!
God bless your family!
Love,

I will also remember Dr. Mialik for the love he showed my mom, my two sisters Betty and Cathy and me after my father's passing when I was 13 years old. DR. Mialik helped me to understand God's purpose for our lives and he baptized me at the age of 13.

Thanks again Dr. Mialik for helping me to become the man I am today.

I did not know Mr Mialik that well, however I know he had to be a wonderful person because his wife was one of the most beautiful and considerate persons I have ever known. I am speaking back to the 1960 when she was teacher and basketball coach a WHS. I am sure Mr Mialik will be missed greatly and we will all get to see him again when we walk through those pearly gates.

From a sister who could not have loved a brother more - I have beautiful thoughts and memories of a life well lived.. He was a brother who gave me strength and hope during the difficult times in my own life and was also there to celebrate many high moments. I have many fond memories of the times I shared with Emil, Joan and his beautiful family. I will forever treasure these loving lasting memories. Joan, Debbie, Barbara, and Richard, may you be comforted to remember that the gifts God blessed Emil with will never be lost. A life well lived is the greatest gift. Psalm 46:1
