Funeral services for Dr. Emily S. Doughty, 71, of West Monroe, LA, will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, February 26, 2026, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, 300 McMillan Rd., West Monroe, officiated by Rev. Scott O’Rear and Dr. Marty Black. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Mulhearn Funeral Home West Monroe. Interment will be at the Richardson Cemetery, Jena, LA, following a 1:00 P.M. graveside service.
She was born on March 31,1954, in Jena, LA, and went to be with her Lord on February 21, 2026, in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Emily Doughty graduated with a B.S. in Nursing from Northeast Louisiana University (NLU) in 1976. She earned a M.S. in Nursing focused on Nursing Education from Texas Women’s University in 1979. She joined the nursing faculty at NLU in 1979 and served as a nursing instructor until 1985. From 1985, she taught nursing at Grambling State University before returning to NLU in 1992. She continued to serve as a nursing instructor at NLU through its transition to become the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM). She was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing when NLU founded its Lambda Mu chapter in 1990.
In 2003, Emily joined the ULM nursing school’s administration upon accepting a position as a course coordinator, and she later became the school’s associate director. She earned her Ed.D. focused on Higher Education from Nova Southeastern University in 2010. In May of 2012 she became the Director of the ULM School of Nursing and presided over its transition to Kitty DeGree School of Nursing. Dr. Doughty retired in 2017, spending her last years traveling and enjoying her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved her friends and fellowship, especially at New Chapel Hill Baptist Church.
She is proceeded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Blanchard Carl Smith of Jena.
Survivors include her husband of forty-five years, Phillip Timothy (Tim) Doughty, son, Phillip Timothy (Tim) Doughty, Jr., both of West Monroe, son, Benjamin (Ben) Truett Doughty, his wife, Margret (Meg) Doughty, their sons Charlie and Oscar, and their daughter, Nora of Mountain View, Arkansas. She is also survived by her brother, Blanchard Carl Smith II, and his wife Lisa, of Jena, LA. She is also survived by three nieces, six nephews, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be: Blanchard Carl Smith III, Richard Smith, Allen Jones, Daren Doughty, Braden Floyd, and Conley Floyd.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Wednesday, February 25, 2025.
