******************************
Emily Marie Hawkins Sloop was born March 27, 1934 to Roy and Norma Hawkins in Asheville, North Carolina.
She grew up on Charlotte Street spending many hours reading in her special yellow maple tree and walking in the evenings along the Grove Park Inn golf course with her Dad.
Emily graduated from Lee Edwards High School in Asheville and The Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte, NC.
In February 1956 she married Jimmie Lawrence Sloop who had served in the U.S. Army in Korea and was a student at The University of South Carolina. Jim served a long and distinguished career as an Officer and Commander in the Asheville Police Department until his death in 1982.
Emily was a 'stay at home' Mom who reared their 4 children: Ramona, Giselle, Larry and John. She was a devoted grade mother while their children attended Saint Joan of Arc Catholic School.
Emily's work career was interestingly quite varied. While her children were in school, she dutifully served as a crossing guard.
She organized the Nursing Office for the Asheville Police Department and worked several years as a Parking Enforcement Officer. Emily enjoyed working on the WNC Blood Mobile traveling throughout the area. She was, herself, a 20-plus pint donor. After Jim's death, she began full-time work; She became the night Nursing Supervisor at the Brooks Howell Retirement Center for Methodist Missionaries.
In 1984 Emily and her new life partner, Polly Moore, moved to the N.C. Coast where she became Nurse Supervisor at Harbor View Retirement Home. A few years later, they moved to "The City of Medicine", Durham, N.C. Emily was immediately hired as Nurse Supervisor at a large 'skilled nursing' center. During her first week on the job, she realized she was the only Nurse in the facility and gave immediate notice of her resignation. Emily's next career was arduous but one of her favorites; she worked for a small animal hospital helping with surgeries, anesthesia and basic veterinary care.
Her final work station was the Durham Veterans Administration Hospital until retiring in 1997. She served as a Pharmacy Technician, achieving both State & National Certification.
In retirement, the joy of her life was attending classes at Duke in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Every semester Emily took two classes, making many new friends and enjoying class trips and the outstanding instructors. Unfortunately, the COVID pandemic severely limited 'in-class' participation and she missed the wealth of experiences she so enjoyed.
Emily was a devout Roman Catholic and loved her church family of many years at Holy Cross R.C.C. When driving and distance became more of a challenge, she transferred membership to Saint Matthew R.C.C. and was greeted with open hearts and arms.
Emily is survived by her kitty cat Ms. DeMayo, perpetual puppy Tiny Tim and her wife/ life partner of 35 years, Polly Moore with whom she has shared love, families, births of 8 beloved grandchildren and births/ adoption of 3 precious great grandchildren.
All 4 adult children survive:
Ramona Moore and husband Terry; Giselle Williams and husband Eddie; Lawrence Sloop and fiance Rhonda; John Sloop and partner Jenny.
Cremation by The Cremation Society of North Carolina.
A Celebration of Emily's Life will be held on the date which would mark her 89th birthday, March 27, 2023.
Place and time will be announced later.
