Emmett Reginald Atkins

Emmett Reginald Atkins, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at his home on Lake Claiborne, surrounded by family.

A funeral service were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at Wesley Chapel, Lake Claiborne.

Born on August 7, 1933, in Athens, Louisiana, Emmett was the son of the late George Emmett Atkins and Myrtie (Hinze) Atkins. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Joan (Wilson) Atkins, and by two siblings, William P. Atkins and Margie Westbrook.

He is survived by his three loving daughters:

      • Regina Graham (Patrick) of Savannah, GA

      • Deborah Brown (Bill) of Woodstock, GA

     • Rebecca Strickler (Jay) of Ruston, LA

He also leaves behind nine grandchildren:

Kathleen Garrigan (Peter), Kristen Graham (Tori), Amanda Brown, Jenna Archevald (Matt), Christopher Smith (Shelia), Anna Herman (Brad), Daniel Strickler, Christopher Strickler, Michael Strickler (Margie).

And eleven great-grandchildren:

Fionn Garrigan, Samuel and Styles Graham, Madison and Mason Archevald, Sawyer and Dawson Smith, Blake and Adeline Herman, and Jayson and Sophia Strickler.

Emmett Reginald Atkins lived a life of service, skill, and deep compassion. A proud veteran, he served his country as a Staff Sergeant Noncommissioned Officer in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. After his military service, he went on to work as an FAA air traffic controller in Memphis for 24 years, ensuring the safety of countless flights. Following his retirement from the FAA, Emmett continued his public service with the state park system, where he dedicated 17 years to the creation and care of Lake Claiborne State Park—a place that stands today as a testament to his vision and hard work.

Emmett’s love of adventure did not end with his career endeavors. His service in the U.S. Air Force ignited a passion for aviation, leading him to become a recreational pilot. Growing up, his three girls enjoyed private air travel in the family’s personal aircrafts. Emmett also found great joy in traveling with Joan in their RV, exploring the country together.

Emmett was a gifted mechanic and a lifelong lover of machines. He built and restored vintage cars, most proudly his 1934 Plymouth coupe hot rod. He was also a licensed pilot and flight mentor, performing aerobatics in air shows and inspiring many to take to the skies. His mechanical talents extended beyond his passions—he was always there for family and friends, ready to lend his time and expertise whenever it was needed.

Beyond his technical talents, Emmett had a tender heart for all of God’s creatures. He lovingly cared for deer, squirrels, raccoons, and birds, creating a peaceful haven for wildlife wherever he roamed.

Those who knew Emmett will remember him as a passionate and selfless man. Acts of service were his love language, and he gave of himself freely and generously to those in need. Whether helping someone fix a broken engine or feeding the animals that visited his yard, Emmett lived with purpose, adventure, and love.

The family of Emmett Atkins extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who has offered their support, prayers, kind words, and presence during this time of loss. Your love and compassion have brought comfort and strength, and we are deeply grateful.
