Mom was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She was a faithful woman who loved the Lord, her family, and the church.
She was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Opelousas. She was an honorary member of the Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church Rosary Altar Society Group. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Mom grew up in Arnaudville with her parents, 5 brothers and a sister. She would oftentimes get together for fun times with the Matt family children, who lived nearby, including her future husband, who eventually went on to serve his country in the Army Air Corps. In her teenage years, she and her brothers would often go to local dance halls for fun nights of dancing. On one occasion, Dad happened to be on leave from the Army Air Corps and he came across Mom’s dance group stopped on the side of the road. He stopped to help but their car would not start so he drove them to the dance where they all danced the night away. On their way home, Dad stopped to try again to get their car started. As fate would have it the car started! Then, they went their separate ways. Dad returned to his military unit, but after that fateful night, they wrote letters back and forth. One thing led to another, Dad won Mom’s heart and eventually asked her father for her hand in marriage while awkwardly fiddling with his hat. They were married in Cecilia, Louisiana, on December 15, 1946. Mom and Dad were truly devoted to each other. They loved to travel and visit family.
Mom worked as a cook in the lunchroom at Opelousas Senior High School for 22 years. She is survived by her son, Sidney J. Matt and wife Peggy of Duson; son, Michael and wife, Cynthia, of Lafayette; and daughter, Anita Bullara of Opelousas; eight grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Broussard and Anita Trahan Broussard; husband, Voorhies Matt; brothers, Overton Broussard, Athanas Broussard, Antoine Broussard, Preston Broussard; Chester Broussard and Emery “Bruce” Broussard; sister, Antoinette Broussard Dupuis; and son-in-law, Tommy Bullara.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to Camelot of Broussard Nursing Home and Bridgeway Hospice for the wonderful care given to their mother during her time of need.
Pallbearers will be Jay Matt, Ryan Matt, Brian Matt, Jack Matt, Chad Bullara, and Eric Bullara.
