Erma Simmons Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Elgin Funeral Home on Nov. 4, 2024.

When you hear of my Homegoing…

don’t worry about me –

The epitome of elegance and steadfast faith, Sister Erma Gean Simmons entered Eternal rest on November 2, 2024, with her family at her bedside.

Erma Jean was born on January 24, 1943, to the late Aaron and Irene Gibson in Jones Prairie, Texas. As a child, she lived in Cameron and Rosebud, Texas. Her family moved to Elgin, and she attended the public schools of Bastrop County.

Erma had a strong Christian foundation. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Pleasant Bethany Baptist Church. Later in life, she settled her membership with her daughter’s family at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church.

Erma married Robert Simmons on April 4, 1961, and the Lord blessed the young couple with two children, Robert Jr. and Evelyn Faye.

Erma was a stay-at-home mother who raised and nurtured her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed taking them to school, picking them up, and ensuring they had a home-cooked meal when they got home.

Erma's hobbies included fishing, going to bingo, playing a good game of pity pat, and going to church.

Awaiting her arrival in Glory are her parents, children, and siblings, Lela Green, Shirley James, Marceal Gibson, Clifton Gibson, and Arthur Gibson.

Sister Simmons’s beautiful life will forever be cherished by her husband, Robert Simmons Sr.; her siblings, Rosie Nolan, Emma (Al) Brown, Frankie Gibson, Jessie (Clyde) Barnett, and Irene Owens; her son-in-law, Kelly Hill Sr. and host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends, including the Mount Carmel Church family.

 I am just a little soldier – Going Home…

Friends and Family will gather for Visitation at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Friday, November 15th from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A Celebration of Erma's life will be held at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Saturday, November 16th at 10:00 AM with Pastor Byron Green presiding. Interment will follow at Sayers Cemetery.
