It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ernest Timmons, 76, of Salt Lake City, Utah. Ernest departed this life peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and quiet strength. Born on November 11, 1948, to the late Mr. Willie F. and Mrs. Luvina B. Timmons in New Orleans, LA, he was the oldest of eight siblings born of this union. Ernest grew up in Wilson Chapel A.M.E. Church and graduated from G.W. Carver Sr. High School in 1966 before joining the U.S. Air Force at the age of 17. He served 16 years in the military, including four years on the RAF Lakenheath Air Force Base in London, England. Upon returning to the U.S., Ernest settled in El Paso, TX, where he pursued higher education, earning a bachelor's degree in social work from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2001. Ernest returned to New Orleans for a short time before being displaced by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He was transported from New Orleans by the military to Salt Lake City, UT, where he was met by Pastor France Davis of Calvary Baptist Church. His story is also featured here: https://www.kuer.org/news/2025-08-28/20-years-on-a-hurricane-katrina-evacuee-says-he-found-genuine-love-in-utah During his years in Utah, Ernest studied special education at Utah State University and went on to earn his master's degree in educational management at Argosy. He was also inducted as a member of the Salt Lake City Freemasons Society in 2007. A devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church, Ernest proudly sang as a member of the Men's Choir. He spent the past 20 years of his life building meaningful connections, always ready with a warm smile and a helping hand. In the past year, though he struggled with health challenges, he continued his work at the George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center until August 2025. Ernest cherished family traditions, especially sharing stories during the holidays. He especially loved Thanksgiving gatherings, which were always a highlight for him. He loved going home to New Orleans and last year celebrated his 75th birthday there surrounded by loved ones. On Monday, September 15, 2025, Ernest was called home to be with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Rev. Willie L. Timmons and Larry Timmons; nephews Curtis L. Timmons, Terrance E. Timmons, Devin D. Timmons; and grand-nephew Jayden A. Timmons. He leaves to cherish his memory one brother, Karl (Karen) Timmons; four sisters, Mary L. Timmons, Susan Ratliff, Lorraine Rodgers, and Corry Ann Timmons; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ernest's final Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at Rhodes Funeral Home on 3933 Washington Ave in New Orleans, LA 70125. Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm with service immediately following at 1:00 pm.

Ernest was a very kind dude. I worked on a neighboring floor when i first met him. I would see him every morning. He would go for his cup of coffee and all the time he would ask me for his check jokingly. I would tell him its in the mail. Then he would laugh. That kind laugh that would fill the room. He will be missed. "Ernest! I got that check for you!!"

A random hallway visit from this special man (maybe not quite so random) when I was having heart problems while at the VA as a social worker. He must have overheard a conversation about a pain in my heart I had while working at VA. He told me to get a CATSCAN and there was a "special going on" at a local hospital (I am a civilian).
His information and advice helped start me on a preventative heart health program ahead of time instead of waiting for a heart attack. He was definitely connected to the Cosmos!

Mr. Timmons was a man of many gifts and accomplishments, whom I treasured working with. He gave so much of himself to serve others. He told me often of his love of food and cooking and his family in New Orleans. He will be deeply missed. My condolences to his loved ones.

I knew Ernest when he came out for his breaks and his lunch and he was always so nice to everyone and he had such respect for each of us. he was so down to earth and we could talk about anything.
He never talked about his accomplishments and I never knew he achieved so much. WHAT A GREAT MAN WHO NEVER TALKED UP ABOUT HIMSELF OR TALKED DOWN TO OTHER PEOLPE.

What a sweet man! He always had a positive word and a smile for everyone he met. I loved when he played music from his phone while he worked. The SLC VAMC will be a little quieter and sad without his calm presence.

Ernest was one of the first employees I interacted with here at the Salt Lake City VA. He was kind, professional, and had that New Orleans charm. We would talk about Jazz music, food, and he would tell me how he planned to go back home one day. I hope you are now well friend, and listening to all your favorite Jazz with that big smile. You will be missed.

Ernest was a good guy. When I went on my lunch breaks I would sit with him and have conversations. He would mention his siblings and how they came to visit him. He was genuine and a hard worker. I really wished that he had more time to go home in March 2026, when he had planned and to spend more time with his family. My condolences to his family, I know they truly loved him.

Rest in peace Airman. And thank you very much for your lifetime of service: Air Force, VA, social worker, and just a wonderful example for the rest us of a good man and how to deal with life challenges.
