Ernest Charles Wendt, a man of deep faith, boundless humor, and a heart full of love, was called to his eternal home on Jan. 31, 2026, at the age of 85. Born in Detroit, Ernie dedicated his life to teaching, ministry and spreading joy.
After earning his bachelor and master degrees in education, Ernie taught at Zion Lutheran Church and School in Detroit and later in Lincoln Park Public Schools. In 1986, he was ordained into the Holy Ministry, faithfully serving congregations across Michigan, including St. John Lutheran Church (Palms), Trinity Lutheran Church (Sawyer), and St. Peter Lutheran Church (Bach), until his retirement in 2002. Even in retirement, Ernie continued to share the Gospel with passion and purpose.
Known for his quick wit, love of Christmas, and dedication to staying connected, Ernie brightened lives with his jokes, prayers, and astonishing 350 Christmas cards sent each year.
Ernie was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilyn (Aug. 13, 2024); his sister, Marlene (Jan. 29, 1960); his nephew, Mark (Dec. 24, 2022); and his niece, Jane (Aug. 12, 2019).
He is survived by his three sons: Adam-Henry, Andrew-Nathan and Jon-Martin; his daughters-in-law: Heather, Mina and Megan; his three grandchildren: Mariana, Clemente and Logan; his nephew, Claude (Carol); and his grand-nieces and grand-nephews: Annie (Dan), Claire (Chris), Sarah, Jeffrey (Rebecca) and James.

Ernie was a JOY. He and Marilyn were such wonderful earthly neighbors. So positive and loving. It was so wonderful to have such a faith - filled neighbor as Ernie was, and is! I am so happy he is with his Father and loved ones. I will surely miss him, I already do.
