Ernestine Short Barrett, affectionately known as Tina, was born on April 12, 1943, in Waverly, Virginia. She embarked on a remarkable journey through life that culminated in her peaceful passing on June 2, 2025. Tina's spirit was defined by her giving nature and vibrant personality; she was a bubbly presence in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her, always ready with a smile and a kind word.
Tina dedicated an impressive 49 years of her life to the accounts payable department at the Virginia Department of Vehicles, where her hard work and commitment earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues. Her educational journey began at Sussex High School in Sussex, Virginia, laying the foundation for a lifetime of achievements.
Tina was a devoted mother to her three daughters, Lydia, Andrea (Michael Curtis), and Vera Barrett. She took immense pride in her role as a mother, and her children were among her proudest accomplishments. Her legacy continued through her three grandchildren, Kahlil Houston, Dominique(April), and Diamond Barrett, along with Tamika Bond, and she cherished every moment spent with her four great-grandchildren.
In her leisure time, Tina found joy in bowling, reading, and cooking. These pursuits not only enriched her own life but also allowed her to share her passions with those around her. She was known for her willingness to help anyone in need, embodying the spirit of community and compassion.
Tina is survived by her loving daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister in law Rose Winston nephew Gerald Wiggins(Edith) and a host of cousins, along with several devoted friends including Eula and Shirley Anderson, Julia Hawkins, Sheila Crump, and Louise Turner.
She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Jefferson and two grandchildren, Kanun and Brandon Barrett, along with other nieces and nephews, each loss felt deeply by her family.
A funeral service to honor Ernestine's life will be held on June 21, 2025, at Joseph Jenkins Jr Funeral Home in Richmond, Virginia. The service will begin at 1:00 PM, with the conclusion at 2:00 PM.
Ernestine Short Barrett leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and resilience. Her vibrant spirit and unwavering commitment to her family and friends will be remembered and cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
