Ernestine Stewart Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Murray Brothers Funeral Home, Inc. - Cascade Chapel on Jan. 14, 2026.
Ernestine Fudge was born on January 1, 1934, in Tazewell, Georgia, to the late Genie and Essie Mae Fudge. She was the youngest of twelve children. Ernestine received her education in Marion County and attended Buena Vista High School. As a young girl, she and her family worshiped at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Buena Vista, Georgia.

After graduating from high school, Ernestine traveled to New York to help care for her brother's children. She later married Ralling Stewart, and together they made their home in New Jersey. From this union, two daughters were born, Denise and Vonda.

Ernestine was a hardworking and dedicated woman. She was employed at Western Electric for several years and later worked at Lockheed before the family relocated back to Georgia.

Upon returning to Georgia, Ernestine united with Southwest Congregational Church, where she faithfully served for many years. She was a devoted Deaconess and an active member of the choir, Mother Board, Women's Society, and Usher Board. Known for her servant's heart, Ernestine was always willing to help wherever she was needed. She also shared her creative gifts as the church decorator, lovingly preparing the sanctuary for special services and celebrations.

Ernestine had a caring spirit and began her career as a caregiver, working with children and elderly women. Over time, she discovered a passion for flower arranging. Self-taught, she created beautiful floral designs and eventually started her own business, decorating weddings and special events. She also worked faithfully at Pristine Chapel for many years.

Ernestine truly enjoyed life. She was an avid shopper who loved finding a good sale and took pride in dressing well. She also enjoyed dining at fine restaurants throughout the metro Atlanta area, with Houston's being one of her favorite places.

Ernestine was preceded in death by her parents, Essie Mae and Genie Fudge; her husband, Ralling Stewart; her brothers, Ceasar Fudge (Jeanette), Eugene Fudge (Carol), Howard Fudge (Rose), Edward Fudge, and Wesley Fudge; and her sisters, Addie Mae Black (Donald), Kathreen Sutton (Otis), Gennie Mae Taylor (Ogia), Georgia Russell (Melvin), Flossie Stewart (Willie), and Elizabeth Fudge.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Denise Harrison (the late Cedric Harrison) and Vonda Thorpe (Jerome, her Son in Love - the "pillow whisperer," who lovingly lifted and positioned her throughout the day to ensure she was comfortable and always well cared for); her grandchildren, Taylor and Isaiah Harrison and Israel Thorpe; and a host of nieces and nephews who affectionately called her "my favorite aunt," whom she loved dearly. Ernestine (Mama Stu), also leaves many friends, near and far, who will forever treasure her love, kindness, and beautiful spirit.
