In Loving Memory of
Ernesto Antonio Calderón
August 25th 1942 – November 4th 2022
Ernesto (Ernie) was born in Brownsville, Texas to José Felix Calderón and Estefana Labrada Calderón. Both parents preceded Ernie in death in 1984 and 2001 respectively. Ernie was also preceded in death in 2021 by his brother José (Joseph) Calderón.
At the age of 18 Ernie joined The United States Air Force and proudly served from 1960 to 1964. His first duty station was in Abilene, Texas where he trained as a crash and structural firefighter. His second duty station was in Chaumont, France. After his military service, he returned to Texas and he used his GI Bill and went to barber school and also received his teachers barber license. He became the youngest barber instructor in the State of Texas. Ernie would later say that being a barber/hairstyling instructor was the most rewarding job he ever had.
During the 70's and 80's Ernie lived and worked in Houston and San Antonio. His two children from his first marriage were born in the 70's, Ernest and Carolyn.
In 1991 Ernie went to visit his son, Ernest, in Washington State and ended up staying longer than what he had planned. He worked as a barber for several years in Washington State before he began a new career with the Social Security Administration. He retired from the Social Security Administration in 2006.
While working for Social Security Administration Ernie met and married the love of his life, Kerry. They were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Gloria. Ernie continued to reside in Washington State with his wife and daughter until his death.
Ernie was a lover of all genres of music. His favorite was the Blues. He also loved the sport of Boxing. His favorite weekend event was to watch a good boxing match. He enjoyed football and was a big Texas Longhorn Football fan. He loved camping and being outdoors. He enjoyed baking and drawing. His favorite movie was The Godfather.
Ernie is survived by his wife Kerry Calderón. His children Donna Cook, Ernest Calderón, Carolyn (Eric) Wheatley, and Gloria Calderón. His three grandchildren Esther, Bethany, and Jaszi Wheatley. His four sisters Sylvia (Gus) Garza, Gloria Calderón, Lynda Calderón, Cynthia (Bruce) Childers and his brother Robert Calderón and Soila Olivarri. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Ernie said that the best time of his life has been spent with his family. He adored his wife, children, and siblings. He was dearly loved by his family and lifelong friends. He will be greatly missed.
