Erwin James Birkoben, a cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away suddenly on November 17, 2025, in
Westland, Michigan. Born on April 1, 1970, in Wayne, Michigan, Erwin's life was a testament to his kind, loving, and funny nature-a beacon of joy to all who knew him.
Erwin grew up under the nurturing care of his mother, Laura Birkoben, and alongside his sister, Cathy, with fond memories created in the company of his late father, Erwin Birkoben. Throughout his life, Erwin's bond with his family was unbreakable, especially the connection he shared with his mother. Together, they enjoyed countless Christian music concerts, immersing themselves in melodies that uplifted their spirits. Weekends were often reserved for cozy movie and popcorn nights, a tradition that Erwin held dear.
A proud and dedicated employee, Erwin spent many years at Ford working on the Stamping Line, where he was also trusted to serve as the backup Team Leader. His commitment and work ethic were as steadfast as his character, earning him the respect and admiration of his colleagues. Erwin's passion extended beyond his career, as he was an ardent fan of horse racing. His enthusiasm for the sport led him to make twice-yearly pilgrimages to Kentucky, where he reveled in the excitement of the races.
Erwin's love for his family was unparalleled. He cherished every moment spent with his sister, Cathy, and her husband, Eric Christensen, as well as his niece, Stephanie, and her husband, Travis Steinke, and his nephew, Edward, and his wife, Brianna Christensen. The joy of his life was amplified by his great-niece, Cadence Steinke, and great-nephew, Gabriel Steinke. The time he spent with them was filled with laughter, learning, and love-memories that will be held close to their hearts forever.
To describe Erwin as kind, loving, and funny is an understatement. His warmth radiated to everyone around him, and his humor brought smiles to the faces of friends and strangers alike. Erwin's legacy is one of compassion, companionship, and an unyielding love for his family. Though his sudden departure leaves a void, the memories he created will continue to inspire and comfort those who were fortunate enough to be a part of his life.
Erwin's life was a beautiful mosaic of moments shared with loved ones, passions pursued with zeal, and kindness spread without reserve. As we bid farewell to a soul that brought so much light into this world, we celebrate the time we had with Erwin James Birkoben. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten, as his spirit lives on in the hearts of all who loved him.
