With profound sadness, but also deep gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Esther Marie Hinde, who peacefully left this world on March 4, 2025, at the age of 99.
Born on December 27, 1925, to Gust and Hilma Johnson at Haxtun, Colorado, Esther lived a long, meaningful life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Lee Hinde and a devoted mother to Bruce Eugene, Gayle Ann, Terry Lee, and Timmy Lynn. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Gayle Ann Wilson, and her brothers, Irwin Johnson and Vernon Johnson. Esther's legacy continued through her six cherished grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to her life.
A true redhead in both hair and spirit, Esther had a quick wit, a fiery sense of humor, and a heart as big as her laugh. She could brighten any room with her mischievous smile and had a knack for delivering the perfect one-liner at just the right moment.
During World War II, Esther began her career as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse, where she taught children of all ages with patience, kindness, and dedication. Her love of learning and teaching left a lasting impression on many young lives. Teaching was one of Esther's most lasting cherished memories.
Esther's nurturing spirit extended into her everyday life. She had a deep love for chickens and spent countless hours caring for her flock, as well as cultivating vibrant gardens that bloomed with beautiful flowers and bountiful harvests. These simple pleasures reflected the care and love she poured into every aspect of her life.
Esther also diligently kept the books for Valley Repair for Lee and Terry, ensuring every detail was handled with care. Her commitment to community service was evident in her volunteer work with the Orphan Grain Train and the Colorado Welcome Center, where her warmth and compassion made a meaningful impact. Esther was a member of Julesburg United Methodist Church joining when she and Lee moved to Julesburg in 1974.
A funeral service will be held at Julesburg Methodist Church on Monday, March 10, at 10:30 AM, with a luncheon provided afterward. Burial will take place at 1:30 PM at Haxtun Cemetery in Haxtun, Colorado, followed by refreshments at the Haxtun Community Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Orphan Grain Train or to Julesburg United Methodist Church in Esther's honor.
May she rest in eternal peace, reunited with loved ones-no doubt tending heavenly gardens, caring for her chickens, and keeping the angels laughing along the way.
