After wanting to be on adventures by running away from home, he finally convinced his parents to sign for him to join the US Navy. They said at least they would know where he was! He was a longtime member of the Menominee VFW where he enjoyed working the pancake and porkie breakfasts along with being one of the clowns for the parades.
Eugene married Norma Wilcox on March 14, 1953 and they had four children: Jean, William, Lee and Bruce.
He made a career with the Merchant Marines until he retired and loved to share many of his stories and adventures he and his buddies had while sailing the oceans. He enjoyed trout fishing with Jim Uecke.
Eugene is survived by his children: Jean O'Brien, Lee (Barb) Furst, and Bruce Furst; granddaughter, Chrystal (Cory) VanPay; and great grandchildren: Cody Wisneski, Jacob Wisneski, and Jack VanPay. He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma in 2006; son, William Furst; and son in law, Timothy O'Brien.
There will be a private graveside service at Riverside Cemetery remembering Eugene. Thank you to Thielen Funeral Home for being so helpful in assisting the family.
