Eugene Austin Gibbs Jr., beloved father, partner, and friend, passed away in Austin, Texas at the age of 82. He is survived by his son, Austin Gibbs; his daughter, Mary Ellen Crow; their families; and his cherished life partner, Kay Cox.
Born in Lufkin, Texas on February 9, 1943, Gene was the only child of Eugene Austin Gibbs Sr. and Helen Stokes. He graduated from Lufkin High School and continued his studies at the University of Texas in Austin, where he joined the Chi Phi Fraternity, forging friendships that lasted a lifetime. It was there he met his wife, Janice Kowalik. After earning a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1966, Gene pursued law at South Texas College of Law in Houston, attending night classes while working, and was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1969.
Gene and Janice adopted their son Austin in 1975 and daughter Mary Ellen in 1978. After Janice's passing five years later, Gene devoted himself to his career in banking and finance, working with CCNB and Mercantile Bank for over three decades.
Later in his professional life, Gene returned to his legal roots, practicing law and discovering a true calling as an expert witness. His experience and insight made him a sought-after authority in his field.
In early 2019, Gene met Kay Cox, with whom he shared years of joy, laughter, and adventure. Gene was known for his love of animals, great food, cold beer, and UT sports. His warm laugh, captivating stories, and unwavering optimism drew people to him, making every gathering brighter.
Gene's presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
