Mr. Eugene Talmadge Lewis, 91, departed this life on Friday, March 13, 2026 . He was born in Lincolnton, Georgia, to the late Pauline and Roy "Pop" Lewis. He was the sixth of eight siblings who were raised in the small town that they cherished so deeply, where family, community, and lasting memories shaped the foundation of a life well lived. He graduated from Lincoln County High School in 1954.
Mr. Lewis was a gifted musician and proudly played the fiddle in his family's gospel bluegrass band, which later became known through the region as the legendary Lewis Family. Music and faith were important parts of his family's life and brought joy to many who heard them play.
Mr. Lewis eventually stepped away from the music industry and established Talmadge Lewis Motors. Through hard work and dedication, he became a successful owner and operator, and the business expanded into Lewis Bus Line.
Mr. Lewis had a deep love for animals. Those who knew him well often spoke of the many hours he devoted to feeding stray cats and rescuing animals in need. Over the years, he was known to return home with an owl, a skunk, and even an armadillo that needed help.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Paulie Copsy and Miggie Lewis, and his brothers, Wallace Lewis and Mosley Lewis
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Cornelia Lagroon Lewis, sons Joey (Cheryl), Mike (Joy), and Stan; grandsons Joshua and Jacob; his brothers Roy (Bonny) and Esley (Evelyn); his sister, Janis; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Serving as pallbearers are Keith Lewis, Scott Williamson, Lewis Phillips, Mike McCombs, Baxter Stanley and Glenn Cooper. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, his love for music and the many lives he touched throughout the years.
Funeral services to celebrate and honor his life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, 2026 at Hephzibah Baptist Church in Lincolnton, Ga with Rev. Paul Revere officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until the hour of service on Sunday in the church sanctuary.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to CSRA Humane Society, 425 Wood Street, Augusta, Ga 30904.
