Eugene Schilder Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home, Corsicana on Aug. 28, 2025.
Eugene "PaPa" Schilder, 80, entered his eternal rest on August 26, 2025. Born on January 17, 1945, Gene dedicated his life to the ones he loved, never failing to put his family and friends above himself. Forever a source of strength, wisdom, honesty, and courage, he walked through this life an inspiration to all those fortunate enough to cross his path. A devout husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he prided himself on loyalty and compassion. Gene's unwavering service to his family was matched only by the service to his country and the United States Army serving two tours, the first on the DMZ in Korea as a young man of 18, followed by a tour in the Vietnam War. After retiring, he and Gale, his beautiful and loving wife of 33 years, settled into a quiet life in the vast countryside of his home state of Texas. An avid outdoorsman, Gene felt most at home surrounded by nature where he worked the land, taking pride in the sweat of a hard day's work. He found joy in the simple things, sunset lake cruises, flickering campfires, strategic chess matches, and collecting antiques that garnered him a string of blue ribbons from the State Fair of Texas. Along with his beloved wife Gale, Gene is survived by his three children, Regenea and husband Brian, Brad and wife Joan, and Gene as well as nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 2nd with a viewing for close friends and family at 11:30am at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Corsicana followed by a graveside service at Baker Cemetery in Kemp, Texas at 2pm.

Gene (Sir) first off let me say thank you for your service to this country. I know that meant the world to you second, let me say thank you for letting me marry your daughter. She means the world to me. you probably don´t know this, but you were a very inspirational person in my life and I never told my wife about it either but the amount of time and effort that you put into making sure that everybody was OK built me into a better person and I can´t thank you enough for that. Gail Regina, Brad, and gene he may have lost somebody that is no longer on this earth that you can speak to every day or see every day, but rest assured that his spirit lives inside each and everyone of you and will always. Brad and Gene i´ve never had a chance to sit down and meet with you guys one of these days that will happen. Sorry I can´t be with all of you. Good calls. I´m on a fire assignment right now in California. Just know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you and I miss him just as much.

I can´t find the perfect words to best describe my Brother in law, Gene Schilder. He was a gentleman, a great man among men, the best husband to his precious wife and my dear sister in law, Gale, a great father to his children and grandchildren, and the best friend that anyone could ever ask for. Always there with a smile or a way to make you feel comfortable and special. It was always Gene and Gale, not just Gene or Gale, when they were out and about, if Gene felt like it, they were together. I remember the bottle of the best champagne and $75 in one dollar bills that you both gave me for my 75th birthday. That was hilarious.
You will definitely be missed Gene, one of the best BIL´s ever along with being one of the best uncles and friend to mine and James´s kids. Rest high on that mountain Gene, thanks for the memories.
