God didn’t promise days without pain
Laughter without sorrow
Nor sun without rain
But he did promise strength for the day
Comfort for the tears and light for the way…
On October 8, 1954, a baby boy was born to LC Lewis and Marie Young, and they named him Eugene Ray Young. Eugene attended the public schools of Bastrop County, named Elgin High School in Elgin, Texas. Eugene grew up with a Christian foundation and accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Winn’s Memorial Baptist Church. Eugene earned the nickname “Hammer Head” as a young child and it followed him throughout his life. He was known by many as “Hammer”.
Hammer was always a hard-working man. Whatever anybody needed, he was there to help. He was employed at NuCon Engineering Inc. for over 29 years. Hammer was favored as the barbeque chef of the family, even training the younger men in the family how to barbeque. Being a family man, he loved his dearly, spending family time was a goal of his, always pulling everyone together. You could tell him, NO, over and over, but he was one who would not give up. He was the life of any gathering, and he loved fishing, always ready with a good fishing tale. Hammer was the one that called to check on everyone, not just family, no matter the time of day.
In 1978, Hammer was united in Holy Matrimony to Larcina Vincent, and this union was blessed with two girls, Marquinta, and Regina Marie.
On September 6, 2023, Hammer joined his family circle. He is at peace and in a place of joy with his parents, LC Lewis, and Marie Nell Young.
Those we love don’t go away – they walk beside us every day - as we keep them alive in our hearts.
Those to cherish Hammer’s priceless memories and to carry on his legacy include a Special friend, Diane Atwood; his daughters, Marquinta “Buffy” and her significant other, James Faulker of Elgin, and Regina and her husband, Darryl Perryman of Katy; and their mother and friend, Larcina Scott of Elgin; his grandchildren, AJ Prince and Adavious Prince, his siblings, James Young of Elgin, Laine Lewis and wife, Betha of Pflugerville, Linsey Lewis and his wife, Sharon of Fort Worth, Brent Hickey and his wife, Melanie, Gloria and her husband, Reverend Norris Eason of Manor, Valea Gilbert of Austin, Charles Etta Wilson of Austin, and Yolanda Montgomery of Temple, Diane’s three daughters and her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
And he is laid to rest,
I seem to hear him whisper,
O’ Lord I’ve done my best!
Well done my faithful servant
I know you’ve struggled hard
That’s why I thought to call you
From labor to rest…
