James Martin Brown Sr. was born on February 13, 1957, to Elmo Sr. and Elizabeth Brown. He was the youngest of eight children. At a young age, James dedicated his life to Christ at Mt. Vernon Church, laying the foundation for his faith and values. James spent the most precious years of his life at the Brickyard, where he grew up and developed a deep love for horses and farming. He rode horses, broke horses, branded cattle, and worked in the garden—something he especially enjoyed doing alongside his mother. His father was a cowboy, and James proudly embraced the cowboy lifestyle, following in his father’s footsteps with hard work and determination.
In the early 1970s, James attended Elgin High School and was among the first Black students to attend the school, helping to mark the beginning of the end of segregation at Elgin High School. After graduating, James answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Army. He served honorably as an aviation helicopter mechanic from 1974 to 1976. Although he was not deployed to war, James took great pride in ensuring helicopters were properly maintained and mission-ready for soldiers. During his military service, he lived in Alabama, Virginia, New Jersey, and Louisiana. After leaving the Army, James lived in Detroit for several years. Later in life, he became the proud father of two children, James Brown Jr. and Shantele Dunham, whom he loved deeply.
James is survived by his children, James Brown Jr. (Idalisha) and Shantele Dunham (Oscar); six granddaughters, Derranisha, Semaj, Genesis, Valencia, and Serenity; one grandson, Oshea; and three great-grandchildren, Trinity, Armoni, and Kason. He is also survived by his siblings, Lola Fay, Norris, and Katie. James was preceded in death by his father, Elmo Sr.; his mother, Elizabeth; and his siblings, Gladys, Elmo Jr., Isaac, and Larry Brown. James Martin Brown Sr. will be remembered for his strength, service, faith, and love for family, horses, and the land. His legacy lives on through the generations he leaves behind. Family and Friends will gather for Visitation at Elgin Funeral Home on Monday, December 22nd, from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. A Home-Going Celebration will follow at 11:00 AM with Reverend L. R. Wilson, Sr., presiding. Interment will be private.
