Eunice Mathis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Paulk Funeral Home - Fitzgerald on Mar. 9, 2026.
Eunice Clark Mathis, 91, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton, Georgia.

Mrs. Mathis was born January 5, 1935, in Wheeler County, Georgia, to the late Lawrence Arthur Clark and Mary Cuzzie Lowery Clark. She was born in her parents' home in Wheeler County and was raised on a farm surrounded by a large and loving family. Growing up in such a close-knit household shaped the person she would become. She often shared stories of picking cotton and tending the farm animals before leaving for school. She was especially close to her younger brother, Dub; her sister, Ruby; and to her beloved "Mama," whom she spoke about daily.

She worked for many years as a nurse at Irwin County Hospital and Palemon Gaskins Nursing Home, where she demonstrated the compassion and servant's heart that defined her life.

Known lovingly as "Nanny," she was devoted to her loved ones and found great joy in spending time with her family, who were the center of her life and her greatest joy.

She was an avid reader of the Bible and left many handwritten notes in its margins.

She is survived by her children: Linda Gail Thompson of Tifton, Brenda Justice of Fitzgerald, Rich and Dana Mathis of Fitzgerald, and Eunicia Mathis of Cordele; her grandchildren: Ashley Elizabeth Rutherford, Anna Marie Thompson, Dana Lynn Thompson, Gregory Shon Grimes, Harley Marie McCook, Robert Allen McCook, John Patrick Mathis, Cody Lance Black, and Kenslee Kate Mathis; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Newton Mathis, Jr.; a daughter, Sherri Joann Mathis; and twelve brothers and sisters.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.
