Obituary of Eva Lui
Eva Lui (née Louie) of Basking Ridge and formerly of Brooklyn, NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 11, 2025. She was 83.
Eva leaves behind her beloved children, daughter Jocelyn and her husband, Carter, sons Randall and his wife, Kimmarie, and Christopher and his wife, Kim; five cherished grandchildren Austen, Madison, Brennen, Davin, and Dayna; one sister, Jean Chin; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Rogers Lui in 2024, and her brother, Lawrence Louie.
Eva was born in New York City on November 11, 1941, to the late Robert and Tuey Gim Louie. She grew up in Chinatown where she eventually met her husband, Rogers. The couple married in 1960 and settled in a small Brooklyn apartment where they raised their children. They later moved to New Jersey as empty nesters. They enjoyed life together for 64 wonderful years, exploring the diverse neighborhoods of NY and NJ, shopping and finding new restaurants. Eva spoke often of trips they took to the United Nations in midtown Manhattan for special luncheon events where they could experience the cuisine of a featured country.
While raising her children, Eva was a part-time student at Baruch College in New York working to obtain a bachelor's degree in accounting. She last worked with the Matrix Capital Group, as Vice President and Treasurer, working in compliance, financial, and administration. Previously she worked at the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) Regulation office for twenty one years, eleven of which was as a supervisor of examiners. She spent a year working for the Anti-Fraud Section out of DC and six years teaching Pre-Phase classes.
Eva had an amazing attention to detail and was self-taught in many crafts and skills, including stained glass, carpentry, upholstery, sewing clothes, knitting, and home repair. She was fearless and always up for a challenge, trying new foods and activities whenever she could. Eva enjoyed cooking Chinese food and other cuisines, and was famous for her Chinese sticky rice and her Jamaican jerk chicken. She and her husband traveled together, visiting Europe, China, Hong Kong, Alaska, and Seattle. She liked to garden and watch crafting and cooking shows as well as K-dramas. In her younger years she played softball, bowled, and golf. Eva kept her mind sharp by doing crossword puzzles and reading. She loved shopping for a good bargain, and she listened to a multitude of different music including country and Chinese music. Eva was the treasurer for the Organization of Chinese Americans for many years, earning the National Unsung Hero award in 2016.
Eva was an amazing wife, mother, and grandmother who will be deeply missed, but her family takes great comfort in knowing she is at peace and reunited with her beloved husband.
Services for Eva were held privately for her family.
