EVANGELIE "EFFIE" FLESSAS

FLESSAS, Evangelie "Effie" Beloved mother, grandmother and lover of life, passed away at the age of 84, on Saturday, August 31. Born and raised in Athens, Greece, Effie moved with her husband, Thanassis, to the United States in 1965. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 62 years in June of this year. Effie is survived by her cherished sister, Miranda; her five treasured children, Tatiana, Marina, Gregory, Daphne and Myrto; their spouses and partners; her ten adored grandchildren, Loukas, Sophia, Zoe, Danae, Thanassis, Clea, Voula, Zerihun, Alia and Ariane; and her nephews, Alexis and Thanassis Cambanis. Effie headed the Modern Greek Collection at Harvard University's Widener Library, where she inspired countless students and colleagues with her knowledge, humor, insight and kindness. Her circle of friends was wide and devoted, reflecting her interests in books, spirituality, yoga and most of all, the people around her. A lifelong learner, Effie's intellect was matched only by her warmth and generosity. Her home on Paros, Greece, was a sanctuary, where she shared her love of life with family and friends. Effie's bright, magnetic personality touched everyone who knew her. She was deeply passionate about politics and longed to see the first female president. Her wisdom, kindness and love changed lives for the better, leaving a legacy of joy and inspiration. Effie will be remembered as a smart, fun and loving soul who embraced all people and was loved by all in return. Relatives and friends are invited to a Celebration of Effie's Life on Saturday, September 7, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, and to a service and sharing of stories from 12:00 to 1:00pm, to be held at DeVito Funeral Home, 761 Mt.
