Mrs. Eveara Mae Wells Manuel
Eveara Mae Wells Manuel, the oldest daughter of the late Eugene Wells, Sr. and the late Mary Lee Scott Wells, was born on Easter Sunday, April 20, 1930, in Pocahontas, Mississippi. She accepted Christ at an early age at Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully until her health begin to decline. She was proceeded in death by: both parents; her oldest son, Henry Lee Wells, Sr.; granddaughter, Sondra D. Wells Arthur; four brothers, Eugene Wells Jr., Porter Wells Sr., Gene Veal, Sr. and Robert Wells; and three sisters, Bernice Manuel, Dessie Ree Garner, and Polly Ann Hodge. Eveara was married to the late Eddie Manuel and worked as a sharecropper at Miles Grocery Store while also taking on private home jobs to ensure her children were well cared for. Despite having only an elementary education herself, she was determined that each of her five children would receive an education. Skipping school for fieldwork was never an option, and pretending to be sick
was futile-castor oil was the cure for any ailment! From the age of five, she began caring for others, starting with her baby brother Cardoza, and continued as the primary caretaker for all her siblings. In retirement, she enjoyed relaxing in her recliner, solving crossword puzzles, coloring,
doing needlepoint, watching Judge Judy, chatting on the phone with her siblings, and taking naps with her great-grand pup, Jasper.
She leaves to cherish her memories: three sons, Earl T. Wells, Reverend Leroy Manuel (JoAnn) and Percy Wells (Mary Lois) all of Jackson, Mississippi; one daughter, Mary L. Wells (Gene) of Jackson, Mississippi; one brother, Cardoza Wells (Lottie) of Jackson, Mississippi; one sister, Vickie Wells of Jackson, Mississippi; and one brother-in-law, John Hodge, Sr. (Mary) of Jackson, Mississippi. God blessed her with 22 grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She also leaves to cherish her memory, her dearest and best friend, Sister Ollie Lee Kennedy.
