Evelyn Doris Foster

Evelyn Doris Foster was born on January 10, 1947, in Laurinburg, NC, to the late Hyder Cureton and the late Roseanna Cureton. She was the oldest of two children. On November 8, 2025, the Lord called her home.

At an early age, Evelyn accepted Christ and joined Joseph Temple AME Church, where her faith remained a cornerstone of her life.

Evelyn completed her schooling in Laurinburg, NC (Scotland County). While in high school, she discovered her love for sewing and fashion design. After graduating, she enrolled in Denmark Technical College (SCATS), where she majored in tailoring.

Upon completing college, Evelyn returned to Scotland County and held various positions in manufacturing before joining the Scotland County School System as a teacher's assistant and substitute teacher. She also taught sewing classes through Richmond Technical College's adult learning program. Throughout this time, she continued to design and create clothing for herself and others.

While at SCATS, Evelyn met Mr. Leroy Foster. After his military service, they married in April 1968 and shared 57 wonderful years together. From this union, they were blessed with two children, Pamela Bynum (Larry) and Leroy DeWayne Foster.

In 1979, Evelyn and Leroy moved to Fayetteville, NC, due to a job transfer. She worked in the Cumberland County School System until a subsequent transfer brought the family to Roanoke, VA. There, she served as the manager of the alterations department at Leggett Department Store and also worked part-time as a self-employed fashion designer and seamstress, specializing in window treatments, formal gowns, and wedding dresses.

In 1986, the Foster family relocated to Virginia Beach, VA, where Evelyn continued her work with Leggett Department Store. She retired in 2010 from S & K Fashion, closing her part-time business.

In 2011, Evelyn suffered a stroke, and during her recovery, she was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma. She courageously battled her illnesses, and on November 8, 2025, she rested peacefully in the arms of the Lord.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Hyder and Roseanna Cureton; sisters-in-law, Verneller Gilliam and Idella R. Fryar; and brothers-in-law, Bobby C. Foster, Sylvester Foster, and Leonard Foster.

She is survived by her husband, Leroy Foster; her daughter, Pamela D. Bynum (Larry) of Woodbridge, VA; her son, Leroy DeWayne Foster of Virginia Beach, VA; her only sister, Willie Mae Williams of Laurinburg, NC; four grandchildren, Diamond Bynum, Larry Bynum III (Tre'), Iysis Foster, and DeWayne T. Foster; two great-grandchildren, Arianna Bynum and Mariah Bynum; and a host of in-laws, extended family, and friends who will cherish her memory forever.
