Rincon – Evelyn Helmly, age 94, affectionately known to her family as Meeme, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 29, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. A devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Evelyn had a deep love for her Global Methodist Church family, animals, flowers, and especially the time she spent with her family and friends. She also loved driving and traveling.
The Chatham County native was a member of Rincon Global Methodist Church for over 70 years, where she was a member of the Chancel Choir and the WW Oglesby Sunday School Class, where she had served as class treasurer. She retired from the Effingham Board of Education, where she worked 39 years in the lunchroom, mostly at South Effingham High School and 34 years as a bus driver. She also served as coordinator for meals at Effingham County Campground.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Helmly; and her parents, Hugh & Patience Louise Channell.
She is survived by her children, Hugh Helmly (Martina), Michael Helmly, and Donna Helmly Newman; grandchildren, Chris Helmly, Shannon Lloyd (Buddy), William Currington, Jason Currington (Matt), Kellie Eason (Wade), Matt Helmly (Melissa) and Kristen Helmly (Henry); and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 9:30 - 11 am Saturday, October 5, 2024 at Rincon Global Methodist Church.
Funeral: 11 am Saturday, October 5, 2024 at Rincon Global Methodist Church.
Interment: Effingham Memorial Gardens
Remembrances: Rincon Global Methodist Church Chancel Choir Fund, 107 Savannah Ave., Rincon, GA 31326.
