Evelyn was much more to many of us, her students, than just our bridge teacher. For her the game of bridge was like the game of life and she was masterful at both. She taught us that first you had to have knowledge, and then practice and perseverance. You had to be brave and learn from your mistakes. Her patience with her students is legendary and all of us are not only better bridge players but better people because of Evelyn. Evelyn may have passed away from this earthly life but all of us know she will be “present” at each GBC game in spirit for many many years to come.
Thank you Evelyn for sharing yourself, your time and talents with so many of us. Karla Shopoff

Evelyn was my main bridge partner, as we played one or two times a week for the past 19 years. I am devastated by her loss. She was only one of three local players to make the top 500 national list of masterpoint winners, and before 2011, made it almost every year. Her health did not permit her to travel. But in 2020 she made the list. She was sharp until her last game (April 2, just 2 days before her death). She taught half the membership of the Gainesville area clubs. For her 85th birthday in 2015, 41 of her students held a game to honor her.

Evelyn, a great bridge player, was also a great teacher. Teaching not just bidding and play, but also bridge ethics and decorum -by her example.

Evelyn was one of the finest bridge players that I have ever played against as well as being a very fine lady. I will miss seeing her smiling face, but I will not miss the beatings she gave me at the bridge table. I hope all your hands are slams up there, Evelyn.

Evelyn accomplished so much during her life, despite the obstacles that women faced in her youth. She was a strong, optimistic woman.
