Evelyn Jo'Neil Smith, age 88, departed this life peacefully on November 15, 2025. Born March 4, 1937, Evelyn was a cherished resident of Gastonia, North Carolina for most of her life except the time she lived in Washington DC.
Evelyn dedicated many years of her life to the Gaston County Health Department. Her work was not merely a job, but a profession that reflected her unwavering dedication to the community she served. After retirement, she worked with The Frame Shop at the Gaston Mall where she took much pleasure from helping customers with their projects.
Evelyn found immense joy in gathering with family and friends, relishing time spent with loved ones. Gatherings were infused with laughter, love, and a warmth that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew her. She will be remembered by her brother Don E. Smith, nephew Steve Smith and his children Tyler and Katie, nephew Greg Smith and his wife Lori and their children Mattie and Britton, lifelong friend Frances Belk and her dear family, her neighborhood friends, and her church.
Loray Baptist Church and East Belmont Church of God were special places for Evelyn where she built enduring friendships as she embraced the teachings from God's word that guided her throughout her life.
Evelyn had a passion for the outdoors, where she found solace among her plants, blooming flowers, and wildlife. She also had a deep affection for her cats, who were companions and a source of joy in her home and heart. She loved going for long evening drives to enjoy each day soaking up every ounce of sunlight.
Evelyn's love for fruit and other simple joys in life brought her delight and reflected her vibrant spirit. Her presence will be profoundly missed, and her memories will live on in the hearts of her loved ones forever. May she rest in eternal peace.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her father Austell Smith, mother Verdie Smith, and brother Jim Smith.
