Evelyn Swinton Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 3, 2025.
With heartfelt sorrow and abiding love, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved matriarch, Evelyn Ann Swinton, better known as "Sister" on July 23, 2025, at the age of 79. Evelyn was born in Mullins, South Carolina, to the late West and Polly Davis, and carried their strength, faith, and compassion throughout her life. Evelyn worked with dedication and pride for many years at the Syracuse VA Medical Center, where she made a meaningful impact through her service to veterans. After retiring from the VA, she relocated to Florida, where she continued her commitment to care by taking on a contractor position through the VA - further extending her lifetime of service and compassion.
From Florida to South Carolina Evelyn began caring for her mother and sister. Eventually, Evelyn returned to New York State, where she found joy and peace in attending New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, reconnecting with her community and faith. She also found comfort in watching her favorite show, Walker, Texas Ranger, and spending cherished time with her family and friends. Whether gathered around a meal, in prayer, or simply enjoying each other's presence, Evelyn made every moment meaningful.
Evelyn was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was predeceased by her late husband, Nathaniel Swinton; her siblings, Helen Richburg Davis, Polly Ann Lewis (Claude Lewis), West Davis Jr. (Barbra Davis), Benjamin Davis, and Shirley Ann Davis; her loving daughter-in law, Karen Swinton; and her cherished grandson, Dylan Swinton.
She leaves behind a lasting legacy of love, faith, and family. Evelyn is survived by her devoted children, Michael Swinton Sr. (Karen Swinton) and Sharelle Swinton Russo (Michael Russo Sr.). She is also survived by her beloved sister, Gale Nanette Davis; grandchildren, Michael Swinton Jr. and Shallanee Russo; and great-grandsons, Jaylin Hayward and Jayaan Hayward, who brought her endless joy and pride to her later years. A woman of unwavering grace, Evelyn was the heart of many gatherings and the voice of wisdom and comfort for all who knew her. Her memory lives on in the many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever carry her spirit in their hearts.
Calling hour will be held on Saturday, August 2nd, 10-11 a.m. at Tucker Missionary Baptist Church, 515 Oakwood Avenue, Syracuse. Funeral services will immediately follow at 11 a.m. Evelyn will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Evelyn, please visit our Tree Store.
