Mrs. Evelyn Smith Thomas, 90, of Cheraw, South Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2025. Born on May 15, 1935, in Marlboro County, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Robert A. and Vergie Hatcher Smith.
Mrs. Thomas was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Cheraw, where she contributed over 20 years working in the nursery, participated in the choir, and was a member of the Lady’s Circle. Her passions included gardening and caring for her yard, and she retired from Cooper Tools Weller, where she worked in the Accounting Department.
Along with her parents, listed above, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Thomas; brothers, Robert “Bobby” Lee Smith, and James P. Smith; and her sister, Carolyn Poston.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her sons, James Edward “Jim” Thomas of Cheraw, SC, and Malcolm Robert “Mac” Thomas (Wendy) of Rock Hill, SC; brothers, Jerry C. “J.C.” Smith (Wilma) of Wallace, SC, Billy Wayne Smith (Lynn) of Cheraw, SC, and Ted Smith (Cantey) of Chatsworth, GA; grandchildren, Reagan Thomas of Cayce, SC, Riley Thomas of Rock Hill, SC, Jackson Thomas of Rock Hill, SC, and Lawson Thomas of Jefferson, SC; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of who she loved dearly.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, 2025, in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church in Cheraw, SC. Burial will follow in St. David’s Cemetery in Cheraw, SC.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. just prior to the service Sunday in the Fellowship Building of First Baptist Church in Cheraw, SC.
