Evelyn Thurmond Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Absolute Economical Funeral Home LLC on Dec. 19, 2025.
Evelyn Maudell Thurmond was born on March 14, 1928, in Katie, Oklahoma (Garvin County), to Charles and Bertha North.
Her father was a Pentecostal Holiness minister. Her parents were very godly and loving. She gave her life to the Lord at 10 years old and enjoyed serving Him throughout her life. She taught Sunday school classes and Vacation Bible School, participated in the ladies' auxiliary, and sang in the choir. She was a student of the Bible all her life and sought to be a good witness.
She and Burton Hollis Thurmond were married on January 25, 1946. From this union, two sons were born, Dwight and Duane. She was a graduate of Oklahoma State University and taught first grade at Woodlands Elementary School in Ponca City. She especially enjoyed big family dinners on holidays and birthdays.
She was especially proud of her family-two sons, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren-and their devotion to the things of God. Her greatest desire was that they would pass on their godly heritage.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sisters, Gertrude Elmore, Charlene West, and Betty Champ; sisters of her blended family, Doris Townley and Wanda Hayes; and her brothers, Gerald and Charles North.
She is survived by her sons, Dwight Thurmond and wife Peggy of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Duane Thurmond and wife Debra of Edmond, Oklahoma;
She is also survived by four grandchildren: Jeffery Thurmond of Dallas, Texas; Jason Thurmond and wife Amanda of Little Elm, Texas; Stefanie Bambrough and husband Andrew of Stillwater, Oklahoma; and Stacy Bentz and husband Jason of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. She is further survived by five great-grandchildren: Mason and Gavin Bambrough of Stillwater, Oklahoma; Sydney and Landon Bentz of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; and Anna Thurmond of Little Elm, Texas.
She is also survived by brother-in-law Harold Thurmond and wife Janie of Crawfordville, Florida; her sister-in-law, Hava Harbor of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and a number of nieces and nephews.
