F. Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carmon Windsor Funeral Home on Jan. 14, 2026.
F. Evelyn Smith, educator, world traveler, and lifelong Windsor resident, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026, at the age of 93. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, as well as brothers Donald S. Smith Jr., Wheeler Smith Sr., sisters-in-law Lois Alley Smith, and Claire Smith, infant sister Edith Nan, and great-niece Jessica Smith.
Born in Windsor, CT on May 6, 1932, Evelyn was the daughter of Florence Carey Smith and Donald S. Smith Sr. and proudly carried her mother's name. A graduate of The Chaffee School and Skidmore College, Evelyn devoted her life to education. Her career spanned decades of service and leadership. As Assistant Headmistress of the Chaffee School for Girls for 15 years, and later as Dean at The Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Evelyn was a guiding force in the lives of countless students and colleagues.
Known to her friends as "Evie," Evelyn was a lifetime member of First Church in Windsor-the oldest Congregational Church in Connecticut-where after 80 years, she was the longest-standing member of the congregation. A true adventurer, Evelyn spent years exploring the world and cultivated friendships across the globe, many of whom became like family. Her heart always returned to West Hill Lake, where summers were spent at her lake house, "Fevs' Myth." She loved opening her summer home for s'mores, kayaking, and fun, creating memories with family and friends. Evelyn was an enthusiastic supporter of UConn women's basketball, cheering on the Lady Huskies with pride every season. She was a Founding Member of the UConn Senior Cheerleaders, attending many home games and traveling to multiple Final Four tournaments. She also delighted in simple joys-family genealogy, memorabilia, cardinals, and nature.
Affectionately known to family as "Nene," Evelyn is survived by her large extended family, including 9 nieces and nephews, 24 great-nieces and nephews, and 21 great-great-nieces and nephews. Children of her brother Donald include Donald Scarborough "Scarby" (Carol Lynn) Smith III, F. Curtis (Sarah) Smith, and William R. (Catherine Pezze) Smith. Children of her brother Wheeler include Wheeler (Eileen) Smith Jr., Nancy (Philip) Kneese, Laurie (Chris) Darling, Ellen Marhefki, Carey (Jeff) Even, and Martie (Dave) Byrd.
She will be remembered fondly by family, friends and former students who appreciated her humor, generosity, and unwavering spirit.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Evelyn's memory may be directed to First Church in Windsor, 107 Palisado Avenue, or to Loomis Chaffee, 4 Batchelder Road, Windsor, with gifts designated to support day students from the Town of Windsor.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 2, 2026 at 10am at the First Church in Windsor, 107 Palisado Avenue, Windsor, followed by a reception. Private interment will be in the family plot in Bridge Street Cemetery, Northampton, MA. The Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, is assisting the family with arrangements as they have done for generations.
