Hurricane, Utah - Ferel Lamar Campbell passed away on September 8, 2025, in Hurricane, Utah. Two weeks previously, he had celebrated his 90th birthday at his beloved retreat on Kolob Mountain. Ferel was born in Tropic, Utah, on August 20, 1935, to Del and Delorse (Bybee) Campbell. He was the 5th of 7 children. When he was 10 years old, his family moved from Bryce Canyon to Zion. His first humble home there was a little rock house by the Grotto picnic area.

He fell in love with and married Beverly Heaton, of Hurricane, on June 29, 1956. He enjoyed following in the footsteps of his father and working with the National Park Service in Zion. He was able to build and maintain many of the trails in the park. He continued on with the National Park Service, working in Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, and Mesa Verde, Colorado for a time. He and Beverly moved back to Hurricane in 1957.

In 1958, Ferel began working for the Utah Department of Transportation, initially as a surveyor, and later as a Highway Design Engineer. He was instrumental in surveying and designing many of the roads we drive on today in Southern Utah, including the first portion of I-15 that was ever constructed. Ferel also had his own surveying company and surveyed most of the old monuments here in Hurricane, including the original downtown monument in 1976.

Ferel enjoyed and made time for camping and fishing on Kolob with children, grandchildren, and family friends. He instilled in all of his posterity a love of the outdoors, nature, and adventure.

Ferel served diligently in church callings and no matter the calling, there was always something in his assignment to do with Boy Scouts and young men. He received the Silver Beaver Award in scouting in 1984. He and Beverly served as endowment workers in the St. George Temple for 22 years. He was actively involved in the Sons of the Utah Pioneers and was famous for his homemade root beer. Ferel and Beverly were honored as the grand marshals for the Hurricane Peach Days Parade in 2021.

Ferel is preceded in death by his parents, and 5 of his siblings, including DelRae (Pollock), Geraldine (Stratton), LeRoy, Bybee, and Jack. He and Beverly were the lucky parents of two sons and three daughters. Their posterity has since grown to 91 descendants, with three more on the way. He is survived by his wife Beverly, daughter Debra (Chris) Wallace, son Brad (Jeanette) Campbell, daughter Cathie (Brad) Winder, son Ron (Cheri) Campbell, and daughter Jilyn (Brent) Nelson. Ferel devoted his life to serving and loving God, his family, friends, neighbors and the community he chose to call home.

The family would like to thank Applegate Home Care and Hospice staff, especially Susan and Crystal for their compassion and service, and the many others who have cared for and loved Ferel over the years. He will be interred in the Hurricane City Cemetery.

Please join us at an open-house, casual dress celebration of his life on Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Hurricane Red Brick Church (274 South 100 West). Refreshments will be served.
