Just one of many students
April 24, 2025
Just a note that even at this late date, so many years after his passing, warm thoughts of Fiore still come to mind out here in the world. I was just one of many undergrads Fiore advised over the years, yet I still recall his as a cordial smile from a friendly face whenever our paths crossed on campus. He was a good guy.

I sent Fiore a Christmas card a couple weeks ago, and today it came back to me. So I just learned about Fiore's passing and read his obituary tonight. My condolences to Connie and Fred and the rest of the family. Fiore and I were fellow grad students at Pitt back in the late 1960s and we remained friends for all these years. We both loved movies, and films were a constant topic of conversation between us. We even started an Oscar contest in the mid-70s that lasted until Fiore retired. Fiore was a loyal friend, always willing to lend an ear or lend a hand. God bless you, Fiore. I will miss you.

As a single mother and older student, I did a long slog in the English Department at Pitt. Fiore was the one person that I recall as a consistent supporter who steered me with kindness and good advice. I have always been grateful that he was my academic adviser. He played a big part in achieving my goal of graduation. He did it all with grace and patience. He was a good man.

I will miss Fiore very much. He was kind, patient, and so funny! He had a special gift for helping stressed out people realize that they were part of a larger, embracing community -- and that all would be well.

For decades I relied on Fiore to help me understand the problems my students encountered trying to navigate their way through the English major. He was always a wise counselor, and his retirement marked an era in the department. I'm surely not the only colleague with fond memories of him.

I am so sorry to learn of Fiore's passing. We were graduate students together from 1971-1977. Always kind and helpful, he was a lovely man and is certainly gone too soon.

Fiore and I were friends in graduate school and I worked with him for 8 years as an academic advisor in Pitt's English Department. He was my mentor in that role and a tremendous exemplar of patience, thoughtfulness, thoroughness, and good humor. He genuinely cared about each of the hundreds of students we worked with. It was a joy to work with someone so unfailingly pleasant and dedicated. He had an encyclopedia knowledge of movies and for years ran an Academy Awards pool, with lots of discussion and hilarity around predictions. . He touched so many lives in such positive ways. We are traveling abroad and I am sorry I can't pay my respects in person.

I met Fiore in 1971 -- he was a student in the first graduate seminar I taught at Pitt. After earning his PhD he stayed on as a teacher and as an adviser for majors and graduate students. When I was Department Chair I came to know the many ways he worked unselfishly and sometimes invisibly to solve problems and overcome obstacles for others. For years Fiore and Annette Galluze -- and when Annette retired, Sandy Russo -- could be seen in the Administrator's office every semester putting together the puzzle of the next teaching schedule comprising hundreds of course assignments for hundreds of full-time and part-time faculty and TA/TFs. He was the Coordinator for the Prison Program, as long as it lasted; as English Major Adviser, he listened to every kind of student dilemma and helped majors find their way through the thickets to graduation. Anyone who taught in the evenings remembers that Fiore kept the Department Office open until after 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, answering questions from walk-ins, putting out brush fires for faculty, and trying to grade papers. One of Fiore's pleasures for many years was to administer the annual Academy Awards lottery, printing ballots on the backsides of old handouts, collecting and scoring the entries, and publishing the results with recognition to prizewinners. When his sister Connie worked in the Department, there were two like minds there to help students and faculty. Condolences to Connie and all of Fiore's family and friends.

I am sorry for the loss of a lovely man who gave so much to the English department, students and faculty alike. I knew I could always count on his help and discretion. He had a nice, wry sense of humor and a deep love of movies both of which he happily shared. He was definitely a crucial part of the Pitt "family."
