Fleta Marie Woodson Hunley, a Mathews County resident for almost seventy years, passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at the age of 92.
Born on November 25, 1932 in Gloucester, she was the daughter of the late James Ramsey Woodson and Lucy Minor Woodson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Walter Scott Hunley; her parents; brothers, Leroy, Carl, and Jimmy Woodson, and sisters, Margaret Osbon and Elizabeth Rowe.
Affectionately known as “Bubbie,” Mrs. Hunley was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. After losing her mother at age seven, she was lovingly raised by her aunt and uncle, Mattie and Carroll Brown in Perrin. She graduated from Achilles High School in 1950 and enjoyed attending her class reunions. After school and before starting her family, she worked at Yorktown Bank and the Naval Weapons Station.
Mrs. Hunley was a member of Union Baptist Church before joining Westville Christian Church, where she was active in the Westville Christian Women’s Fellowship group. She cherished her family, neighbors, church community, and the outdoors. Until recent months, she could often be seen tending her yard on her lawnmower or pulling weeds. Even known to have a weed eater in one hand and a cane in another.
Her favorite saying was, “I am so proud of my family and love them all with a passion. I thank the Good Lord every day for all the blessings he gives us.”
She is survived by her sons, Danny Hunley (Mary Frances) and William Hunley (Beth); grandchildren, Stephanie Sutton (Scott), Heather Criner (Matt), Amanda Savedge (Chris), and Scott Hunley; great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Ella Sutton, Walter and Whitley Criner, and Autumn Savedge; her sister, Dorothy Reams; many nieces and nephews, and her companion cat, Hollie.
Mrs. Hunley’s legacy of love and devotion will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held at Westville Christian Church on Sunday, October 19 at 2 p.m. A reception will follow the service. The interment will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Outreach Fund, attention: Nelda Gibbs, 72 Moon Drive, Moon, Va. 23119 and Westville CWF, attention: scholarship, P.O. Box 496, Mathews, Va. 23109.
