Flora Mae Fielder

Flora Mae Fielder, 77, of Longton/Wichita, KS passed away in her home on Thursday, December 25th, 2025. Flora’s Graveside Service will be held at 10:00am, Saturday, January 3rd at Longton City Cemetery. Flowers may be sent to Webb & Rodrick Mortuary in Independence, KS. Flora was born June 26th , 1948, in Minneola, KS to Raymond and Esther (Dixon) Voorhees. She attended and graduated from Reading, KS High School. Later that same year Flora met the love of her life working in a small cafe’ that she worked at in Reading . A college boy that she short changed by “accident”. Flora married Stephen Howard Fielder on July 7, 1968, in Nowata, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Longton, Kansas where Flora pursued various lines of work before getting a job at Elk Valley Schools in Longton as their Head Cook. For 37 years she made homemade meals and rolls for the students and staff of Elk Valley. Flora was also a member of the Methodist Church and the Longton Boosters

 4-H Club as a parent and project leader. Flora was always up for an any adventure that her husband Stephen could think of. She helped him with numerus projects around their 5 acre farm. Helping to raise lambs, pigs, cows, goats, chickens, tending to a huge garden or any reptile or stray animal that got dropped off at their door step.

Flora was preceded in death by her husband Stephen Fielder, parents Raymond and Esther, older brothers John Voorhees and Warren Voorhees and a grandson Tre Michael. Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Stephanie (Richard) Babino, Wichita, Ks; Sarah (Jason) Scates, Andover, Ks; one brother George (Sharon) Voorhees, Colony, KS, grandchildren Tanisha (Jacob) Riddle, Ashlyn Babino, Brock Scates, Emma Scates, Josh (Sasha) Riddle, Great grandchildren Nixa Riddle, Ezra Riddle, Axel Riddle, Cora Riddle, Kian Riddle, Cody Baker, Hartlynn Riddle, Stori Riddle and many nieces and nephews.

Flora never liked to be the center of attention, always happy to work behind the scenes, if not pushing her daughters to get a 4-H or school project done on time or making sure all of her husband’s farm animals got fed and put away while he ran to a meeting, it was making dozens and dozens of her homemade cinnamon rolls for a bake sale or auction.

Flora loved being able to help people.
