Flora Geiger Obituary

Flora Geiger
Dec. 2, 1929 - July 16, 2023
Flora Geiger, a resident at Touchmark in Vancouver, Wash., passed away the evening of July 16, 2023, after a brief illness; she was 93.
Born Flora Blanche LaRue Dec. 2, 1929, at Wilcox Maternity Hospital in Portland, Ore., to Elmer and Ellen LaRue. Flora grew up in Portland and Aloha, Ore., and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1948. After high school, she attended Lewis & Clark College. On July 28, 1950, she married John Geiger at Reedville Presbyterian Church where they had met as children. They resided in Portland, Lake Oswego, and Washougal before going to Touchmark in Vancouver.
Volunteerism was an imperative in her life. At Multnomah United Presbyterian Church, she was one of the first female Elders in the church, sang in the choir, was a member of Session, directed the bell choir, led a 4H knitting group, and taught Sunday school. When they moved to Washougal, Flora started and directed the bell choir at St. Johns Presbyterian Church in Camas, Wash. Further, she volunteered in the Portland Public School district as President of the Maplewood Elementary PTA, and President of the Wilson High School PTA - eventually serving as President of the Oregon State PTA. She tutored reading at Maplewood and at Prune Hill Elementary in Camas.
For 20 years, Flora volunteered in the restaurant at Albertina Kerr Center in Portland and was President of The Old Kerr Nursery Association (TOKNA).
In addition to volunteering, Flora enjoyed raising her children and going on family backpacking adventures; and, vacationing to Trouthaven at Wallowa Lake, Sunriver, or the Oregon Coast. Memorable backpacking excursions included a number of trails in Oregon as well as Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and New Zealand. Much of the backpacking and hiking coats, vests, tents, and sleeping bags were handmade by Flora using FrostLine kits. She was one of the best freeze-dried food chefs to grace the trails. Other activities that she enjoyed were tennis, Nordic skiing, sewing, knitting, playing bridge, solitaire, and doing crossword puzzles.
Just prior to her passing, Flora was able to enjoy the company of all her children and many of her grandkids and great grandkids.
Flora's husband John preceded her in death in 2005; and her brother, Donald preceded her in death in 2006. She is survived by her sister, Gertrude Johnson (Robert); her four children, Richard (Cynthia Farina), Phyllis Danielson (Paul), Deanna (Janine Nelson), and Thomas; 10 grandchildren, Braden, Brad, Danielle, Mikel, Matt, Drew, Shane, Jesse, Livy, and Sam; five great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Emmy, Leif, Sofia, and Eliana; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Touchmark staff for their caring work over the years; and, mom's friends there.
A memorial gathering will take place at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023, at Touchmark at Fairway Village in Vancouver, Wash.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to Albertina Kerr Center or Multnomah Presbyterian Church in her name.

So many good memories of both Flora and John and our Mom and Dad Skip and Jean. My brother Mark and I often watched the four of them play bridge through the years. And what a trooper Flora was in the trip our bell choir took to Chicago. We were definitely a handful 60+ years ago. Now rest in peace with John.

Flora and John Geiger were good friends, bridge players, and fellow church goers at Multnomah United Presbyterian Church with my parents, Jean and Skip Hollyfield.
