Flora Rogers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chapel Memorial Funeral Home - Waterbury on Mar. 4, 2026.
Ms. Flora Jean (Moore) Rogers, of Danbury, Connecticut was born to the late Ike and Willie Mae (Rogers) Moore Sr., in Eden Mississippi on December 29, 1944.

She was allowed to come to Danbury, Connecticut to live with her brother Floyd and his family as a companion and assistant helping with her nieces and nephew. While growing up she attended Mount Pleasant AME Zion Church. Flora loved to read, and she heard that life was better in some of the northern states.

She attended schools in Eden and Yazoo City Mississippi and schools in Danbury, Connecticut, Roberts Avenue, New Street and Danbury High School. While attending Danbury High School she participated in athletic track activities and got the chance to compete against Wilma Rudolph's High School.

When she returned to Danbury, Connecticut, she met William G. Rogers who became her best friend and the love of her life. William and Flora were united in holy matrimony for 45 years until he passed away April 19, 2009.

Flora was an excellent cook, very creative. On June 1, 1967, she began working at Danbury Hospital, within weeks she was asked to be a Cook. This was the job of her dreams, she was cooking at the hospital for 43 years, retiring on November 15, 2009. She wrote and modified recipes and menus for the patients checking with the dieticians in reference to diet restrictions. She also wrote recipes and menus for the café customers and catering events within the hospital. She will always be remembered for her delicious food and mouthwatering soups. She always received rave reviews in reference to the food she prepared and soon became a Supervisor, Head Chef, and Dietary Aid.

Flora met and made many friends during her many years at the hospital, shopping at her favorite supermarket and around town. Her grandson Kevin Riley who accompanied her into the supermarket and other stores ran back to his grandfather's car, very excited, telling his grandfather "Grandpa grandma knows everyone in the whole world." She was really loved and respected by many, a very giving and kindhearted lady with a charming smile, always willing to help others.

At the age of 81, Flora a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend was called home to rest at Danbury Hospital on Sunday February 22, 2026. Flora was preceded in death by her late husband William G. Rogers Sr., one Sister in-law Sherry Louise Rogers, four sisters; Lucy Banks, Letha Toran, Melviney Jones, Kathleen Bush, seven brothers, Ike Moore Jr., Paul Moore Sr., Floyd Moore, James Moore, Mack Moore, Ozean Moore, Clarence Moore; two aunts; Eloise White, Mary Poteat, of Harford, five nieces; Avis Owens, Alice Faye Moore, Rosie Bush, Patsy Ann Banks and Randi Toran.

I worked at Danbury Hospital for 28 years and one of my fondest memories is every day that we were all blessed by having Flora Mae in our lives. She was an AMAZING Chef, a true friend, an individual who showed everyone she met, her tremendous love for her family and the Lord, Jesus Christ. Her heart was bigger than the universe and her smile absolutely lit up the world every moment of every day!! She was such a great listener and gave such sage advice. Her love knew no boundaries and it's comforting knowing that she's now resting in Heaven and we'll be reunited one day. I love you, Flora...thank you for putting so much love in your food and friendships. God bless your family as they now have to adjust life without you here on Earth. You're an AMAZING woman and I'm honored to be able to call you my friend.
