Florence May Extrom

Florence May Carlyon was born on May L9, L925, in Muskegon, Michigan, to Alice Huizenga Carlyon and William H. "Harry" Carlyon. She was the eldest of three children.
Flo completed high school in Muskegon then attended Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo MI before transferring to the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She received her degree in physical therapy.
FIo met Paul Extrom at the First Methodist Church in Madison. They were married on September 11, L948, and had been married 54 years when he passed in March 2003.
ln the early 1950's, Flo and Paul moved to Oregon, settled in Portland, and joined the First Methodist Church there. Daughter Joan was born in 1954. Flo worked as a physical therapist at Emanuel Hospital in Portland for 40 years and was active in the Oregon Physical Therapy Association, serving on the scholarship committee. She was active in the PTA at Joan's school, taught Sunday School, and was a Camp Fire leader.
ln 1968 the family moved to Beaverton and FIo joined Christ United Methodist Church in SW Portland. She was a youth group leader, was in charge of Christ UMC's medical equipment closet, and helped start the church's Good Samaritan Committee, which kept track of shut-ins and provided transportation to appointments and shopping.
Flo lived in Beaverton for 45 years before moving to Corvallis in 2013 to be closer to Joan, and joined College United Methodist Church in Philomath. She lived at Stoneybrook Lodge, Stoneybrook Assisted Living, and spent the last seven years at Willamette Springs Memory Care.
Flo had a beautiful voice. She was a caring and supportive wife and mother. She loved birds and angels and most of all adored her granddaughters, Sam and Crystal.
Flo died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis on May 8, 2024, just eleven days before her 99th birthday. She was buried next to Paul on May 14, 2024, at Mount Union Cemetery in Philomath.
Flo was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Dr. William H. "Bill" Carlyon. She is survived by daughter Joan of Philomath; granddaughters Samantha Corbin of Lake Oswego and Crystal Walden (husband Brandon) of Fort lrwin CA; sister Elaine Stricker (husband Ken) and nephew Kevin Stricker of Traverse City Ml; niece Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Bingham of Encino CA; nephew David Lewis; and chosen family Ken Corbin and Jean Goul.
