Florence South Foster Rainier, 100, of North, Virginia entered into her heavenly home on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. Florence was born in North, Virginia to the late J. W. Foster and Pearle Soles Foster.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Upsher C. “Buster” Rainier; her brother, Justus Foster; her brother-in-law, Melvin Rainier, and her sisters-in-law, Golden Dutton, Beulah Sadler, Ruth Robins, Lydia Rowe, Marilyn Morgan, Joyce Downs, Janice South, and Audrey Mitchem.
Florence is survived by her two daughters, Charlene R. Small (Billy), and Renee R. Mahone (George); her four grandsons, William Small, Jr. (Tara), J. Craig Small (Katherine), George C. “Trey” Mahone, III, Russell U. Mahone, and her five great-grandchildren, Sarah Beth, Joice R., Soles, Alex, and Kate F. Small. She is also survived by three first cousins, Rose Soles Hudgins, Phyllis Buchanan, and Charlotte Vana, as well as many loving nieces and nephews, extended family, church family, and friends.
Florence graduated from Mathews High School in 1941 and worked as a bookkeeper for the Mathews Dairy. She was a lifelong member of Spring Hill Baptist Church where she taught the Friendship Sunday School Class until she was 94, and was active in WMU, Vacation Bible School, and served as church treasurer. She loved family gatherings and taking summer vacations with her extended family.
The family would like to thank her doctor, David Alpert, M.D., her devoted at-home caregivers, the staff at Heron Cove 2, and Riverside Hospice for their loving care.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 19, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Spring Hill Baptist Church, Cobbs Creek, Virginia. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the church with burial to follow in Spring Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Spring Hill Baptist Church, P.O. Box 92, Cobbs Creek, Virginia 23035, or to Mathews Meals on Wheels, c/o Nelda Gibbs, P.O. Box 369, Mathews, Virginia 23109. Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews is assisting the family.
