Henry -- Florence Mattern Steele, 91, passed away at 4:50 p.m. at Lacon Rehab & Nursing, formally St. Joseph's Nursing Home/Hospice Care on Sunday, March 3, 2024. Florence was born on November 28, 1932, to George E. and Gertrude Kapraun Mattern. Florence married Robert Steele on September 11, 1954. Though they divorced in September of 1979, they continued to remain the love of each other's lives. Bob preceded her in death on January 7, 1988.
Florence was a nurse's aid for much of her life, working in nursing homes and later as a home healthcare aid. She also enjoyed refinishing furniture, antiques and watching the Chicago Bulls and occasional Cubs and Bears games.
Florence is survived by two of her children, Kim (Linda) Steele of Lansing, MI, and Matthew (Laurie) Steele of Ottawa. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Taryn (Mark) Kramer of Spring Valley, Ian Steele of Henry and Mari Steele of Ottawa. Two great grandchildren: Elijah and Delta Kramer of Spring Valley, also survive her. Her sister Clara Steele of Kewanee, and three sisters-in-law: Terry Steele Olson of Apple Valley, MN; Marge Mattern of Edwards and Janet McKenna Schultz of Peoria.
Florence was preceded in death by her two eldest sons, Robert Patrick and Thomas Bradley. Her brothers: Henry (Hank) Mattern, Clarence Mattern, and Samuel Mattern, as well as sisters: Grace Bogner and Theresa Maubach also preceded her in death.
Florence was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 7. She will be interred in Calvary Cemetery in Henry, IL following mass.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
