Florene "Flo" Phillips Lea was born on May 11, 1947, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Henry Phillips Jr.
and Alma Goodlow Phillips.
At an early age, Flo accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and became a member of Camphor
United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge. She received her primary and secondary education through the
East Baton Rouge Parish School System and proudly graduated from Scotlandville High School in May
1965.
Following high school, Flo entered the workforce full-time while attending business school,
demonstrating the perseverance that would define her life. She later enrolled at Southern University in
Baton Rouge, where she excelled academically and, in the spring of 1974, graduated with highest honors,
earning a bachelor's degree in accounting.
After graduation, Flo began her professional career in Houston, Texas, joining Shell Oil Company. Over
the years, she held several positions, including with Aramco Services Company, before concluding her
distinguished career at Houston Community College, where she retired in 2011.
While living in Sugar Land, Texas during the mid-1980s, Flo became a devoted member of Christ United
Methodist Church. She took great joy in witnessing the congregation's growth from a small group
meeting in a junior high cafeteria to a thriving, multi-service church with thousands of members.
Although the youngest of five siblings, Flo was a natural leader. She became the family's trusted advisor
and senior consultant, offering thoughtful guidance and wisdom to loved ones facing major life decisions.
Deeply devoted to her family, Flo delighted in bringing people together. Starting in the early 1990's, she
coordinated the first family retreat to honor the lives and legacy of Shadrack and Rose Caraway Webb, an
event she lovingly organized every other year until her health began to decline around 2012.
Her passion for celebration continued as she planned surprise birthday parties, holiday gatherings, and
other special events, all expressions of her deep love for family and friends.
Flo was preceded in death by her beloved parents and her sisters, Sally Hillard and Mary Levi.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband of 25 years, Isaac Lea; her loving son, Darryl
Worthy (Kimberly) of Pearland, Texas; her precious grandchildren, Ashley Worthy of Bethesda,
Maryland, and Austin Worthy (Mallory) of Angleton, Texas; and her cherished great-granddaughter,
Weslie Worthy of Angleton, Texas.
She is also lovingly remembered by her dear siblings, Barbara Love, Roger Phillips, and Patricia Phillips;
her devoted bonus children, Ladeadra Howard (Nelson), Karen Allen (Michael), Corey Lea (Monica), and
Antoine Walthur; and her cherished bonus grandchildren, Ashlan Howard, Cameron Howard, Haley
Howard, Peyton Lea, Caius Lea, and Amelia Walthur. She also leaves behind a host of loving nieces,
nephews, and friends who will forever treasure her memory.
Flo will be remembered as a kind, prayerful, and compassionate woman, whose radiant spirit, generosity,
and unwavering faith touched all who knew her. Her energy and love will be deeply missed, but her
legacy will live on in the hearts of those she so deeply loved.
