My sweet Grandpa. When I visited you 2 weeks ago, I had no idea it would be my last. I'm so glad we got to talk, laugh, hug and tell each other we loved one another. It is a memory I will cherish forever. Some of my best childhood memories are with you and Granny. I loved visits to the farm where yall would let me run wild, riding my bike, or kicking up dust and grass in my go-cart. You taught me how to care for and love chickens, ducks, ponies, goats and bunnies. You and daddy taught me how to drive a pickup truck and shoot guns in the fields. You were always there for my birthdays and softball games. I adore you, I always have and I always will. You were a good man, in the truest form and have set the example for all of us grandchildren to follow. As sad as I am, I feel overwhelming gratitude. I am thankful for your life, your love, your lessons and God's grace in a peaceful death. How glorious heaven must be with you there and reunited with Granny, Dad and Uncle Dale. I love you and I will miss you, never to forget you. May your light will continue to shine through all of us.

We will miss you so much, Grandpa. I'm so glad we got to hear your stories about growing up on Varina Farm; chasing down baby skunks for your dad to de-scent so you could have pets!; about how you enjoyed raising animals; and your adventure with the sale of some hogs and their mysterious "disease"(!) You seemed to have had such a happy childhood, and we never heard you complain about poverty or lack. You went to Varina High School, when it was still at what is now Varina Elementary, so Noah went to 'your'school. And later in your life, thank you for your service in the Marine Corps - you were so proud to serve. Thank you for leading youth on Varina baseball teams; they still remember you, and honored you recently with a photo and letter. You gave your heart to Jesus one day when we were at church, and began to quietly seek His Word, and His way. You discreetly gave generously to help others - 700 Club, Hardy Central, Toys For Tots, March Of Dimes, Special Olympics, Wounded Warriors...You sheltered so many over time in your home, humble as it was.
Most of all, you loved to spend time with your family, and it meant so much to Noah and Melissa to have you at their various activites. You watched many a football, soccer, softball, and baseball game and practice. We enjoyed having you visit while we dyed Easter eggs, carved a pumpkin, or enjoyed a simple meal together.
We knew you as a sweet, gentle soul, with few words, but a mischievous and unexpected sense of humor. You have been a quiet, steady presence in Noah's life, and with Melissa....oh how she is going to miss her best buddy. You accepted her just as she is, and you spoiled her unrelentingly -THANK YOU. She has clasped her hands together, looked to the sky, and prayed to God to "please help Grandpa." Oh, how she loves you....
Grandpa, we watched you grieve for your best friend, Pete, and then your dear Jerry, and time went by and you buried your last dog. We tried to hold you here, but you began to hear the call to follow them on to the Creator's side. Now you are there, and you bask in His light. This is what gives us peace, and helps us let you go. We are so blessed to have had in our lives.
Go rest high on that mountain, Grandpa.
Love,
Kathy, Melissa, and Noah
