Floyd Hamilton Powell, age 86, of
Somerset, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 4, 2024.
Floyd was born on January 22, 1938 to Thurston and Ella Powell in Lawrenceville, VA. After Floyd graduated from James Solomon Russell High School in 1955, he enlisted in the United States Army. He was afforded an opportunity to travel the world and spend time abroad while on active duty in Berlin, Germany and Paris, France. After being honorably discharge from the Army, he moved to New Jersey where he met and married Randa Jean Ross of
Lawndale, NC. He attended Rutgers University in
New Brunswick, NJ where he studied Chemistry and Marketing.
After graduating with a Bachelor's degree from Rutgers University, he worked at American Cyanamid as Director of Personnel for several years. After retiring from American Cyanamid, he then pursued a career in Real Estate where he ultimately started his own company, Abide Realty Inc., where he served as Broker for over 20 years. He also was a Real Estate Instructor who taught a Real Estate prelicensure course for the Franklin Township Board of Education Adult Evening Program for those who desired a career in Real Estate. His lifelong commitment and passion was to abide with those of the community while helping them find safe, reliable housing in Middlesex and Somerset Counties.
Floyd was a longtime member of Sharon Baptist Church,
New Brunswick, NJ, where he served as Chairman of the Trustee Board for many years before assuming the position of Church Financial Secretary.
Floyd was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His memory will be cherished and forever remembered by his beloved wife Randa Jean Powell of 57 years; three daughters, Pam Lucas (John) of
Charlotte, NC, Sonya Powell of
Somerset, NJ, and Kimberly Powell of
North Brunswick, NJ; five grandchildren, Nachanta, Asha, Jahira, William, and Aubrey; two great grandchildren, Aubri and Nhuri; two brothers Aubrey Powell and Ron Powell; four sisters, Evelyn Kelley, Johnella McFarland, Alice Green, and Charlene Craddock (Willie), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was predeceased by Thurston Powell, Ella Powell Jones; and three sisters, Gertrude Kelly, Vivian Powell, and Carolyn Powell.
