Mrs. Frances Enora Dickerson Huggard, 93, of Newport News, VA, entered eternal rest on February 7, 2025. Frances was born on February 17, 1931, to Wilson Robert & Clara H. Dickerson Hackney in Huntington West, VA. At a very early age, she moved to Virginia, where she was raised by her very dear Uncle Moses L. & Frances R. Hearns in Boyd Tavern, VA. She attended Keswick Grade School and graduated from St. Francis DeSales High School of Powhatan, VA. She moved in with her Aunt Susie Hearns Clark in Baltimore, Maryland, where she attended Cortez Peters Business School.
Upon graduation, she moved to Culpepper, VA where she worked in the school system as a secretary to the principal for several years. In 1956, she met the love of her life James Richard Huggard, Jr. They were married in 1957 at her childhood church Union Run Baptist Church, Keswick, VA. They moved to Staunton, VA and attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where they lived happily for many years. During the early years of their marriage, they were blessed with two wonderful children, Renée LaVerne Huggard Lewis and Graylin Dwayne Huggard. In 1981 they decided to move to Newport News, VA, and began attending Emmanuel Baptist Church.
There, she was a longtime member of the Deaconess Board, the Willing Workers and the Senior Ministry. She also took much pride in serving her community working in the Food Ministry of Emmanuel House, Inc. She was a member of the Les Femmes Des Hommes Civic & Social Club and the Modernettes Civic & Social Club. She retired from Eastern State Hospital where she worked as a nursesaide. In her free time, she enjoyed traveling and creating lasting memories with her family.
Her favorite bible verse is Romans 10:9-10. And her favorite song is "What A Friend We Have in Jesus". Frances was predeceased by her parents and brother Wilson (W.R.) Dickerson.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband James R. Huggard, Jr., her children, Renée H. Lewis (Clinton) and Graylin D. Huggard (Jennifer); her grandchildren Justin D. Huggard (Crystal), Evan T. Huggard (Priscilla), Trenton Huggard, Marcus Huggard, Corenda R. Gaines (Kendra), and Alex C. Lewis (Tiffany); her nieces Gwenith Dickerson, Laurie Dickerson, and LaFon Dickerson; her great-grandchildren Kadence, Kyree, Leila & Olivia Huggard. Two very dear friends, "like sisters" Mildred Yates Strother and Eugenia Becks Taylor, and a host of nieces, nephews and very dear relatives.
The words she leaves behind: "Father God - You are the light that lights my way, the hope that lifts my spirits, the balm that heals my body, and the resilience that keeps me keeping on. Thank you, God, for the miracle that is my life. Amen."
If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation. - Romans 10:9-10
It is the desire of the Huggard. - Lewis families that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers
