Frances was born June 7, 1947, in Fort Dodge, the daughter of Francis V. and Madelyn (Trost) Echelberger. She graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 1965, and continued her education at Bernel College of Hairstyling. On December 9, 1967, she was united in marriage to John E. Smith at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Over the years she worked as a cashier for Target, Warehouse Market, Randall’s and Wal-Mart until her retirement in 2010. She truly enjoyed going to work and loved the people. She especially adored the children (all ages). For several years, she was a foster mom to over 30 babies. She enjoyed spending time with her family, particularly her beloved grandchildren, whose laughter and energy brought her immense joy. A frequent visitor to local garage sales, she had a keen eye for treasures and enjoyed the thrill of discovery that each sale presented. Frances was especially fond of her Yorkshire Terriers, who filled her home with lively companionship. In addition to her love for family and pets, Frances found beauty in nature. Watching the hummingbirds that frequented her yard became a favorite pastime. She cherished her daily ritual of watching her favorite soap operas, immersing herself in the stories and characters that captivated her imagination. Moreover, Frances engaged in spirited debates with her husband, showcasing her passion for discussion.
