Francis Costa Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sullivan Funeral Home - Hanover on Dec. 15, 2025.
Francis V. Costa, known to many as Frank or Frankie, passed away peacefully, with his daughter and son-in-law by his side. He was born in Boston in 1937 and was the son of Nancy Pino Costa and Vincent Costa.

Frank is survived by his beloved daughters, Sharon Costa McNamara and her husband Mark, and Elizabeth Costa, lovingly known as Liz, who was named after his favorite aunt growing up. He was the proud grandfather of Kasey McNamara Hughes and her husband Dustin, and McKenzie Frances McNamara and her boyfriend, Ethan VanDerpoel, all of whom brought him endless joy. His special relationship with his grandchildren will forever be cherished, and they will always remember him as their Nunu.

Frank is also survived by his siblings, Elizabeth Miglietta, Anthony Costa, and Catherine Donahue along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Lucielle "Dolly" Haggarty.

Frank touched countless lives, especially during the years he owned Audrey's Variety in Dorchester, located behind St. Margaret's Church. Many remember the warmth and sense of community he created inside that small corner store. He lovingly hosted Christmas Eve gatherings where neighbors were always welcome, and local priests would stop by between Christmas Eve Masses. Frank was a talented cook, best known for his homemade Italian dishes that filled the room with comfort and love.

In 1978, Frank was honored by the Mayor of Boston for his dedication to his community during the Blizzard of 78. His commitment to helping others never went unnoticed.

Frank enjoyed many passions throughout his life. In his younger years, he loved riding his motorcycle and later developed a passion for skiing at Attitash Mountain in New Hampshire while staying at The Penguin Ski Club. He also took great joy in sailing alongside his best friends, Bernie and Paul, with whom he is now reunited in heaven. Some of his recent memories were sailing Boston Harbor with his daughter Sharon and her childhood friends, Kim Litterio and Karen Munroe.

Frank also had a deep love for dancing and could often be found out on the dance floor every weekend. In quieter moments, he found joy in tending his vegetable gardens, a hobby he proudly passed on to his family.

Frank also loved playing cards, especially cribbage, and was known for organizing friendly competitions with trophies for the winners. His humor, warmth, and playful spirit were always part of who he was.

Frank lived with Lewy Body Dementia for the past three years, facing it with strength and courage. In his final days, he was lovingly surrounded by those who meant the most to him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Services will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Sullivan Funeral Home in Hanover.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations in Frank's memory be made through the following GoFundMe link, which has been established to benefit Beth Israel Hospital's Senior Behavioral Health Department. Sharon, as his primary caregiver, is especially grateful to the extraordinary team of medical professionals who cared for Frank with compassion, dignity, and respect during his final days. All funds raised will be used specifically for the purchase of high-back recliner wheelchairs to provide comfort-focused care for patients like Frank and to help ease the physical demands of patient transport for staff.

Frankie was a friend of mine for many years. When we first met I was 18, he was 21. I always liked him. He was fun to be with. We stayed in touch through the years with reunions of Peabody Square friends. Over he past ten years we got together with friends for dinner on Fridays at the Elks in Quincy, and always met at the Bean Post on Saturday night and danced. It was the highlight of Frankie's night to be with his friends, and we loved being with him. Frankie was always fun and always a gentleman. He was so missed when he he could no longer attend the dances. My heart is filled with sadness to lose this dear friend. Rest In Peace my dear friend.
